Had a Diet Pepsi at 11 months out.

Was during a working lunch.

Two minutes after finishing it off.......was my turn to address the group.

Carbonation was not fun. Thought I was gonna hurl the entire time....Every time I opened my mouth to speak it felt like bubbles were gonna fly outa my mouth.

Surgeon gave me the okay to have Diet Dews if I wanted them (6th month appointment). He said, "Sure...give 'em a try if you can tolerate them". I think it was a setup. Tha brotha knew I'd not be able to.

I'm perfectly okay with Water & coffee.

I am about a year and a half out and I still haven't had a carbonated drink. I was a Diet Dew addict before surgery and I just don't even want to open that door. Plus, all of my joints felt better after just a week away from all the chemicals in those damn drinks.

I'm just about 2 years out and still do not drink carbonated beverages - at least not more than a sip or two. There are (and have been) plenty of times I'd love to drink a Diet Coke, Diet Cheerwine, Diet Sunkist, or Diet Root Beer, but I do not like the way the carbonation makes me feel. Once in a great while, I will take a sip or two, nothing more, of my husband's Diet Sunkist just to taste something other than our usual SF flavored Water, tea, coffee, plain Water, etc. I continue to have great restriction with my sleeve so sometimes one or two bites (or sips) too many can/will make me feel absolutely miserable for at least a hour afterwards. It's not worth it.

@@Dub isn't it so weird how this surgery affects people so differently . 10 weeks out and carbonation slides right one down with no problems . Unfortunately.

It is odd. Truly a case of each of us having to refine things to our individual preferences.

I've never really noticed any problems with losing weight when I was pre-op and drinking Diet Dews and the other diet colas. It's just something now that I"m glad to set aside. I was drinking way more of them than I should. I feel better....more hydrated....with Water and coffee. I still rely on Splenda for coffee.....and likely always will.

I am a newbie and had my surgery on May 27th and have had issues since. My surgeon said I could have flat Soda if that helps. Right after I had surgery I had no interest in food or drink and was in a ton of pain. I ended up taking dilaudid for 3 weeks and I also had mild nausea so I took zofran every so often. I finally was feeling okay again and then 2 days later the extreme nausea hit. I took my 8 mg zofran and it did nothing, I thought maybe I was hungry so I tried to eat..huge mistake. I threw it up and the nausea got worse and then the pain started. I gave it another day and when I still felt so sick I went to the ER. Just the smell of coffee made me want to throw up. I could not be around food or think about food I was so nauseous. I ended up staying in the hospital for 9 days and they did an endoscopy to open up a kink I had in the connection from my stomach to my intestines. They put a picc line in and I had to give myself infusions every night to give me fluids and nutrients since I couldn't eat or drink. I did not eat or drink anything for over a month because of the horrible nausea.

I finally was able to start eat and drink a bit a month or 2 ago but I still have issues getting enough Protein and Fluid in. I am trying all different Protein drinks and powders but I'm really only able to eat a yogurt small amounts of Protein throughout the day. Right now my intake st each meal is a 5 oz yogurt or 2-3 oz protein and 1 oz veggies. I had been giving myself those infusions all the way up to a week and a half ago. That was when I had my second blood infection from the picc line and landed me in the hospital again.

I often read the stories of others experiences and how great they are doing and I can't help but be jealous. My surgeon assures me that this is normal and it happens to a few people after the surgery. He said it should go away after a few days or months, they aren't sure. Well it has been months and I'm still suffering. It has been a long road. I had my gallbladder removed last Tuesday and went home from the hospital on Wednesday. I was back in the ER on Saturday and am now in the hospital again awaiting results from tests to see why I am in extreme pain with vomiting...

Even though I have had a really tough time I don't regret the surgery. It's saved my life.

Starting weight:540

Surgery weight :480

Current weight:383

I wish you the best of luck!

I drink carbonated diet beverages daily. I drank them with a straw for years, but I am now three-years post-op and I just drink them the way I used to- can, bottle, glass, whatever. Diet Dr. Pepper, Diet Pepsi, sugar free Red Bull, Diet Root Beer...I have no issues with carbonation. I lasted on the whole "no diet soda" rule for about 6 weeks and I've had it ever since.

I drink them. And sparkling Water. I didn't START drinking them until I was about 6ish months or so out, as the carbonation was a bit much for me. My surgeon advised drinking it out of a glass with a straw and LOTS OF ICE. Let the carbonation settle and the ice melt a little. Will be less of a shock on your sleeve.

He has never seen carbonation cause any issues with a sleeve, however MOST sleeves don't like it, it's an irritant. Usually if I let the bubbles fizz out a bit I am fine. I'm also several years out.

I still never finish a drink, though and going out, I made myself stop ordering them because I have to wait so long after eating that I never get to it. If I drink before I eat I am too full to eat. So I have them at home, with takeout and most times I don't finish it.

Also I agree with Alex that it will hurt like a mother effer at 9 weeks out. At 9 weeks I was just barely getting in solids... don't feel like you're the only person at the kid's table! Your progress goes as fast as it goes and while I think people should be open to seeing how their sleeves can handle certain things i also dont believe in pushing or testing the sleeve.

The sleeve is your new boss. I call mine Jelly and she's a DIVA. Some days a sprite zero is gooood to me. Some days it makes me wanna hurl. Depends on the day.

@@Butterflywarrior I hope your surgery goes well...be sure to check back in, okay? It's a whole new world post-op :)

hello, sorry off today but was sorta asked to so thought I would update and say surgery went well, happy to have a private room, gas is killing my chest, walked the floor twice. Nothing by month still and I'm sooo thirsty and they won't even let me use sponge lollipops... I am using mouthwash but it doesn't help much and as per usual they have kinda messed my pain management up. Still overall I'm happy

Perhaps some food for thought for diet soda fans:

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/21/well/eat/for-weight-loss-water-beats-diet-soda.html?

--people on the same diet except drinking Water instead of diet soda lost more weight, had better insulin readings, etc.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
