Optifast (Vanilla to Exchange)

Recommended Posts

Did you ask your clinic? I think I read that at Dr. Cobourn's office they kept a couple boxes of each flavour to exchange incase someone didn't like a particular flavour. This goes back to January, but they still might - not sure who your surgeon is.

I feel your pain. I only got Vanilla, and it was horrrrible. I wish I'd got chocolate instead. I ended up with enough left over to sell one box, and I STILL have about 10 packets in my cupboard that I can't bear to throw away, even though I'll never drink them again!!

How much longer does your surgeon want you on Optifast? We were supposed to keep taking it for a week or so after surgery, but I couldn't take it, and had maybe 2 !

I could barely handle 3 a day and that was when i took it let alone 4 a day.. I must have 3 boxes or so left.. BAD ME!!!! But, all i have is vanilla and I had to plug my nose and chug the stuff before i tasted it so bad. I will call the clinic on Tuesday to see if I can exchange them. I have some Breakfast anytime for after the surgery when I can start taking some. As, there was NO WAY in hell I was taking vanilla Optifast if i wanted to not be sick.

I have never tried the vanilla, I would be willing to exchange a few, as I am getting really sick of the chocolate. I am not sure how far apart we live, and if it is worth the drive to exchange only a few. I am in Oakville.

Vikki, have you been trying anything to switch up the flavour? The only thing that got me through the Optifast during my pre-op was adding Crystal light singles to each shake (and making it like a smoothie with tons of ice, in my magic bullet).

If you haven't, I'd HIGHLY advise trying it, if you can't switch your vanilla for chocolate. People have also suggested adding cold Chai tea, various food flavorings (you know, the little bottles you can get near the baking foods)... I even tried sugar-free DaVinci syrups in Dulce de leche and Irish Cream, that I had leftover from my Atkins days. There are TONS of options, I'm sure some other people who've done Otifast will chime in with what they did to make it more palatable.

Are you just drinking them as a way to get Protein in, or what? Cause... there are better Protein drinks and/or ways to get your protein!

(and yeah, me too... towards the end of my pre-op diet, I was lucky if I had more than ONE Optifast a day, I dreaded it that much.)

Melady, I too am on the Optifast preop diet. I like the chocolate ones way better than the vanilla. But i found that if i added a little more Water and threw in raspberries or strawberries and blended that all up then pour it over lots of ice. I could manage getting it down. I found that crushing up the ice in the blender to make it like a shake was worse for me and it took longer to drink. Anyways best of luck!

Heya Sweet:

I live in the ottawa area. I would love some chocolate to exchange as I hate with a passion the vanilla. Message me and we can discuss the details.

Thanks

Melady

I added instant coffee in the morning and it was good. Then I had vanilla with fruit in the magic bullet and ice of course....liked that to. Pm I had a chocolate microwaved and it was like hot chocolate...good. After a few days I did poorly on the optifast...I was on holidays with my family and bailed badly. Lost zip!!! My doc said it was ok because I didn't have as much weight to lose as some others........that made me feel better. Now I am selling off my Optifast to someone in Toronto.

Good luck,

Neef

Well I'm one of those sick people who actually loved the Optifast. I had both vanilla and chocolate and liked each equally. I added SF syrups and sometimes berries (just a few) and it went down really well. In fact, after my surgery I contacted my clinic to see if I could buy more of it but they said they preferred people not use it post band. Since I usually have a Protein shake once a day anyway (great way to get protien in) I thought it would be okay. The thing I like most about it is the fact that it taste great in just Water (yes, i said "tastes great"). Very few other Protein mixes taste good with just Water (at least that's my opinion).

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
