Diet and Exercise before surgery?!?!?

Tanette, I completely understand where you are at right now. I had a month and a half before my first appointment, and I knew how determined I was to make the necessary changes for the rest of my life, so I gave myself permission to have the last supper one too many times. I gained 13 lbs. I have been on my preop plan for 6 weeks now, and just got rid of those 13 pounds - in effect I screwed myself out of 6 weeks preop.

I have been told by my doctor that now is the time to learn about how to live after the honeymoon. Once we are postop we will be overwhelmed with the physical realities, so we need to have this preop stuff down pat. It sounds like you have about 100 days until you could be having surgery. It takes about 100 days to make a major lifestyle change made up of small changes each day. Hope I am making sense - this is my first post on bariatricpal.

Thank you. It makes since. I just have to choose the right foods now. It's now or never. I don't want to be the one who regains all the weight back. That's disappointing and embarrassing.

I am on my pre-op diet right now. Before I started this I decided to do baby steps. Thought it would be easier. First I stopped all carbonated beverages. I new for me this would be hard so I did that first. Then I did away with caffeine. I thought that would be hard but I never had a headache or anything. Then I started having a Protein shake for Breakfast and a healthy lunch. Did this for a while to get use to it. I never ate Breakfast and rarely ate lunch. This has been the hardest for me. Then I started working on supper. Just making healthier choices. Now I'm on 2 Protein drinks and 1 meal. Hasn't been very hard at all. I think I prepared my mind as well as my body. Through all this I started adding in Water arobics. This way I'm sure is not

everyone's way,but it ius working for me. I've lost 25 pounds and don't really feel like I'm dieting. I feel like I am making life changes.

Ok. So for me my doctor didn't really say it was a six month diet. However I weighed in every month. I went up I went down. She said that was fine that's what the insurance company wants to see. So she didn't really push me. I just have to do this on my own. Like always

I really identify with your post. I haven't made many changes yet.. Honestly I'm scared to make the changes because they will cause me to lose weight and if I do that I could be denied by insurance. (I purposely gained 7 lbs in order to qualify. )

What I have done is cut way back on caffeine, tested out Protein shakes , bought my Vitamins, and I also read the pre and post op diet guidelines over and over, so I know exactly what I have to do when the time is right.

You sound just like me @@bostonmama minus all the caffeine I don't drink much of that anyway. I usually always have Water. My thing is as much as I drink Water I don't feel like it's enough. I've tried several Protein drinks and my favorites are Premier Protien and Pure Protien both I can get from Walmart. I have to get my Vitamins. However my sister sales the spray Vitamins so I'm going to ask the nutritionist about those and if I can use those I will . That way I do t have the issue with trying to get pills down. I hear they are great for Bariatric patients. Well best of luck to you honey. I was just being honest about everything you know.

It’s really up to you. The more changes you can make before surgery, the lower-risk surgery will be, and the easier recovery will be.

If you’re not ready to make major changes now, you could still think about smaller changes. For example, instead of worrying about hitting the gym for an hour, you could walk slowly around the block. Or you could take smaller portions of dessert. Or you could drink more Water.

It’s really up to you. You will definitely benefit from whatever prep you put in. Good luck!

You have to do it small steps. I had to ween from Diet Coke one month than cut way back on bread the next, then walk for 10

Minutes on my lunch hour, it really is baby steps. My surgery is Monday and I am ready and so grateful I started early!i just know my post op is going to go so much better!

I walk a lot at work because of my job. It's different from my other job where I stood a lot but not as much walking. I have lost about 8 pounds since I posted this . I can tell the difference. I appreciate all the help. Thanks again guys .

You can only be as successfull as the effort that you put into this. Everybodies adventure is different but there are a few things that are the same, I had to sit down and have a Huge Hit to my Ego and stop making excuses and just to shut my mouth and just do as I was told. It is a hard thing to be an adult and to just do as we are told. I made the choice to do what the nutritionist and what the physical therapist told me to do, I made to choice to think before I eat anything, I made the choice to get up off my butt when I did not want to, there are so many days and 100 different excuses for why I couldn't go for a walk but only one reason why I should ME! It is not an easy journey, if it were easy obesity would be cured and none of us would be here, but it is not easy, it is hard, it is the hardest thing many of us have every had to do. It took me a week to get my head in to the game, it took me 2 weeks to notice that walking was becoming easier, it took 3 weeks to look forward to salads and Protein shakes, now I am 16 weeks in and I am d 41 pound and a full dress size, I think before I eat, working out is part of my daily routine, I am ready for this!

Remember to Love yourself because you have to live with yourself for the rest of your life.

Tanette I just got my surgery date. I started in March. I spent the first month making poor choices. I thought I could wait for the "miracle" surgery to come. I had an awesome nutritionalist that said "here is a list of items that you need to do to be successful after surgery, just pick one item to work on today" I thought I was so clever I picked drinking 64 oz of Water a day. That way I could still eat. LOL well that much Water sure cut down the amount I ate. The next time I picked chewing my found to liquid consistency. Hmm I still get to eat what I want. Well after chewing for so long I cut down the amount of the smaller amounts I was already eating. Then I picked increasing my Protein etc.

The point is that I chose which items to start with. I messed up often at first but I am close to my surgery date and I feel like a success already.

Just pick one thing, now, that will make you successful after surgery that way your body and your mind won't be so stressed when that surgery day comes for you.

You don't need to be perfect just a human who wants to become healthy.

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
