Drinking liquids AFTER a protein shake

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone has been advised on this-

Should you refrain from drinking anything 30 minutes AFTER your Protein replacement, just like when you eat "food" ( purée, mushy, solids)?

Interested in hearing responses.

I don't really see why it would matter. liquids pass through your stomach in a matter of seconds. As a slightly thicker liquid, a Protein shake might stay in there a tiny bit longer, but probably not much.

I honestly don't think the guidelines about drinking before or after eating are all that critical. My NUT said I could drink right up until the time I started eating once I was fully healed. The risk before then is "filling up" on fluids and not having enough room for food when it's time to eat. But, once the swelling from the surgery was gone, liquids would pass straight through, so it was impossible to "fill up" on them.

As for drinking after eating, I was told to wait 20 minutes, but I typically wait more like 40, because when I am full of food, I simply have nowhere for the fluids to go, so it makes me super, uncomfortably full to try to drink too soon after eating.

The REAL critical and lasting habit you want to form is not drinking WHILE eating. Drinking WHILE eating waters down your food, making it runnier, and making it pass through your stomach more quickly, allowing you to eat more and defeating the purpose of the restriction.

liquids do not pass right thru my sleeve. A 16 oz glass of Water leaves me feeling full for over 30 minutes. I have a Protein shake for Breakfast everyday and it keeps me full for at least 2 hrs, sometimes more. My doc didn't advise on not drinking after Protein Shake but I wait an hour since they fill me up.

I am almost 3 mths out and I hope it last a while longer!

I was told that liquids and Protein Shakes go right through your sleeve (the latter, a little slower I'm sure), and the Water rule does not apply in the liquid stage. I still practice it though. I had to do that for years with the band.

Did you have a barium swallow test? Liquids should definitely pass right through your sleeve once you are fully healed.

I had a contrast (different then barium) swallow test the day after surgery and all was well. My surgeon said that some do get a feeling of satiety from liquids. Even before surgery I could fill up on liquids. I have not had any issues with any solid foods and am doing great.

My NUT said liquids are liquids. I tend to wait because the shakes give me some satiety and I really try to zero in on that feeling.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
