First day on liquid diet!

Recommended Posts

My doc and nut said I could have the crystal light with caffeine in it to help with my headaches when I start my liquid diet on the 19th. Might want to check with them and see if you can. Good luck everyone :)

Headaches seem to be universal in this process. Worse than surgery lol!

Today was day 3. I didn't feel so good mainly because I'm having a very demanding work week and finding it tough to pace my Protein, but I figure it's good practice for post-op. Yesterday I had a slight headache, although I've cut out caffeine, I drank a couple of ounces of coffee which solved it. The worst part of today was people kept ducking into my office while eating birthday cake from the break room! Aaaahhh!

My surgery is scheduled for Monday 19th. It's is Friday 27th today. I am on a liquid only diet. The first two days were pretty rough but since then I've tolerated it. I don't see how you can prepare meals for your family because I have tried to stay completely away from cooked meals. Anyway in 3 days this torture will be over. I understand once you have the surgery the food cravings decline. Anyway, if I can do it without cheating, anyone can do it! Good luck!

My pre-op diet starts next week for my surgery on 9/29 (thankfully, I only need a one week diet) but I appreciate hearing everyone's perspective so I know what to expect. I will be traveling for business for the first two days of the diet - any suggestions on how to manage the diet AND not scratch anyone's eyes out? I'm seriously praying that there is no birthday cake floating around the office next week!

You are so lucky you only have to do one week! Unfortunately I don't have any good advise I'm starting day 3 today and I'm still having a rough time, and a terrible headache. We just have to be strong and think is for a good cause. and I don't know how I've manage to do that, I've cooked full meals for my family the past to days and it's been torture! My husband says not to cook but I feel that if I can't handle it now I would never be able to, so I feel is good practice for after I get the surgery. Good luck to you! Keep in touch.

Hang in there. In a few weeks, the dreaded liquid diet will be a distant memory. If you haven't tried the Tylenol for the headaches, you should definitely try it if your surgeon allows. Most surgeons say no aspirin or NSAIDs- ibuprofen, naproxen prior to surgery but are ok with plain Tylenol. I had to take a big dose of Tylenol ( 1gram- 2 extra strength tablets) every morning during my pre-op diet. When I tried going without it, I had an all day long headache.

I would definitely take the hubby up on the meal prep thing. No need to torture yourself. You will probably find it much easier to prep meals for others post-op. For me, the pre-op diet period was the hardest. The hunger was terrible. Post-op, I had no problem fixing food for others because I didn't have the hunger sensation.

I've cleaned out the pantry & fridge, told my family to please be considerate as this is a struggle. They have older so it's easier but they have been eating my vegetable Soup and then I made them a special gluten filled casserole - for each week and 2 weeks after surgery- which I was never able to eat as I'm GF, that they can just heat up in the oven.

The hardest part so far was celebrating my son's birthday at a restaurant last night. I was able to find low sodium Soup, Decaf unsweetened tea and took SF Jello while they all ate pie. My daughters bday is going to be post op so who knows where I'll be in the process then. But I found a way to make it work!

I am on day 2 of my 7 day pre op diet and I too am having to worst constant nagging headache. My surgery is Sept. 23 . I am struggling watching the family eat as well but I am fortunate that my hubby is doing the cooking. Does anyone have any ideas other than tylenol for this headache? I ask because the tylenol isn't working. Good luck to all of you on your journeys!

Excedrin

The only thing about Excedrin is that some formulations (for example Excedrin Migraine) contain aspirin and caffeine which most surgeons don't like you to take prior to surgery.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
