First day of pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Today is the first day of my pre-op diet. I can have 6 Protein shakes, Jello, 2 cups of vegetables, clear chick broth, coffee and sugar free ice pops.

I'm concerned that it will be difficult sticking to this diet and losing the weight they want me to loose before surgery. They haven't said how much that is, though.

The pre-op diet lasts 14 days. How was it for other people? Do you have any advice?

Well, you should count your blessings that you are allowed to eat so much! I was only allowed 3 shakes and one green salad with calorie-free dressing per day. You should be able to make it on 6 shakes and all those extras for sure!

It won't be easy. The pre-op diet sucks for everyone. But it's only 14 days and you have your whole life to live, so just hang in there! The first 3-4 days will be hardest as your body enters ketosis. You will likely have headaches and light-headedness.

Agree with Jamie. Your pre-op is considered mild compared to some. Gut it through the first few days. Beyond that it's much easier. Stay busy. In the end it's a few weeks for the rest of your life. Stay focused and don't get down or start to believe your stomach lol. My stomach is a cruel liar. :) Good luck!

Good grief that's a pile of food for a pre-op diet compared to what most of us were restricted to.

You'll never be hungry with that much intake. Space it out over even intervals and the ride it out. The time will pass swiftly and you'll have great weight loss momentum going into the surgery.

I was thinking the same thing! Today is day 1 of my pre-op diet and I'm struggling BIG TIME! I can have 5 Protein shakes, sugar free freeze pops (three 15 calorie) per day and either Jello, 1 cup of strained cream Soup or 6 oz fruit flavored no sugar added light yogurt (100 calories) in which none of the above sounds tasty!

This is my 2nd day of liquid diet. Doing ok. I also have the same diet as you and it isn't to loose weight but to shrink your liver so they can get to your stomach easier. Looking forward to my new life.

This is absolutely correct. The point of the pre-op liquid diet is to shrink your liver. Some weight loss during this time is a signal to your surgeon that you did stick to the diet, but there is no target amount to lose. Almost all of the weight people lose on the pre-op diet is just Water weight anyway. The point of it is to shrink your liver by depleting it of glycogen. Glycogen is one of the reasons we retain Water. Once the liver is depleted of it, we will retain less water, thus a drop in water weight.

Sure beats the 3-4 Protein Shakes that my surgeon allowed per day.

Sounds like a buffet by comparison, lol.

You can do it. It's all worth it in the end.

19th day here on a 4 Protein Shakes a day (with almond, skim or soy milk) or 5 shakes with Water, 1 c no sodium broth. I'm allowed sugar-free Jello but I don't eat any sucralose so I have to pass on that one.

The best advice that I was given is to space out your Protein shakes, and whether you want them or not at the given time, drink them. Make sure you drink the full daily number of shakes. If not, you'll find yourself hungry and fall into temptation. Also, of course, drink lots of Water. I found it helped to add different types of extracts to my shakes. For example, I got Frontier banana extract and a 1/4 tsp of that in my vanilla Protein shake made a world of difference in flavor. I also got caramel, almond and vanilla extract. Lots of types out there.

Good luck, you'll do fine!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
