Headache Medicine After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I have headaches a couple of times a month, usually related to sinus pressure or a mild Migraine. I typically use Excedrin. What do you recommend for headaches that don't contain NSAIDs? How about medicine for cold and flu?

Tylenol is what most surgeons will recommend, you may want to check with yours.

I am 1-1/2 years out and take Advil pretty regularly.... is that not allowed even a while after surgery???

Advil is not allowed, only Tylenol. I used to have terrible headaches but now I do not for some reason. I am looking into essential oils I keep hearing about. I also have hay fever, and all the Cold Medicines are not allowed.

So sorry to hear everyone is having headache problems! Tylenol does absolutely nothing for me and I suffer from arthritis as well as sinus headaches. My doctor told me that if you have a gastric sleeve, it's okay to use Aleve occasionally. I try to use essential oils and they work well but I still sometimes need the Aleve. For a headache try using peppermint oil. Do not get it too close to your eyes. Try mixing a drop or two with a carrier oil and rub it on the back of your neck or on your forehead. For allergies mix an equal amount of lemon, peppermint, and lavender oil together with a carrier oil. Rub it on the bottoms of your feet every morning and evening. (The soles absorb essential oils very quickly.) Hope this helps.

I always have liquid Tylenol on hand for toothaches, which I get frequently now. :( Luckily, I don't get nearly as many headaches as I used to before surgery...

Coconut oil is a good binder for this and it makes your feet soft.

I struggle with the same issue. I have always had headaches and Advil and Excedrin were my go-to's. My doc says I can use Advil occasionally (up to 1-2 time per week) if needed, and I am a bypass patient.

Given the risk, I haven't. I just tough them out. Take Tylenol, which really doesn't help.

I actually took myself of NSAIDs about 6 weeks before surgery to make sure I could do this (also have serious osteoarthritis - need 2 new knees and a new hip (getting new hip this January)).

I've been NSAID free for almost 7 months now. It can be difficult at times, but I'd trade those NSAIDs for the 147 lbs I've lost anytime!

In some weird way, my doctor giving me permission to use them sparingly has actually helped in not using them. Knowing the safety net is there is if I "really need it" helps me get through the headaches and joint pain.

You should try Excedrin Tension Headache. It is Excedrin without the aspirin.

And caffeine which seems to be a great combo for me.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
