Cut carbs, now I can't sleep?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I am three months in to my nine-month physician supervised diet. I decided to lower the amount of carbs I have been eating (not even super low, I try to keep it around 100 per day) Anyway, I have noticed that I have had a lot of trouble falling asleep lately. I mentioned it at work, and one of my co-workers said "oh yeah, that's because you cut carbs!" I looked it up, and it seems this isn't an unusual thing. Has anyone else dealt with this, and how did you handle it? Does it stop eventually? I am tired of being tired.

I got no answer for you, but going through the samething, only I am not tired at all. But, yep it is common when you go into keatons I think it is called. Hopefully it passes for us both soon. I talked my nut today, she said I have to up my carbs, I am getting less than 20 a day.

Wow, I had no idea! This past week I've had a horrible time trying to sleep. My diet change and cutting carbs started August 1st. It's like I'm not tired but I HAVE to go to bed. I also take a prescription sleep aide and I'm still having trouble.

When I was doing the pre-op monthly counseling.....I cut calories as per my NUT's suggested plan.

I wound up switching bariatric centers after two months because the opportunity presented itself to have the surgery in 6 weeks vs waiting longer.

I then cut carbs as well as calories. Kept carbs under 50 grams per day.

I did notice tow things fairly soon after:

1) Overall energy began to improve. Not a turbo charged amount, lol, but a steady feel of being able to do what I wanted and not getting tired.

2) A much reduced desire to snack. The old me was a bigtime night snacker. I lost the urges to do this. As a result I'd find myself lying in bed at night and being somewhat restless. I came up with a workaround plan that was spot on. I simply made my last meal of the day a Protein shake.....specifically a casein Protein Shake. Optimum Nutrition makes a great casein powder. This stuff is a slow digesting type of Protein. It keeps you feeling full for longer. I'd have one of these and go to bed feeling like I'd had a nice meal and would be able to sleep with ease.

Hi there, I got sleeved in Manhattan on 8/5. Exactly 3 weeks ago. I have recovered so quickly, it is almost ridiculous. I have been able to eat everything, love the sensation of getting full and leaving food in my plate. This had never happened before in my entire life. But I am having 2 major issues, number one is insomnia (despite keeping active during the day--I go for long walks or cycle in the afternoons), My insomnia leads to late night eating. I have eaten nuts and yogurt, feeling very guilty. As a result my weight loss has slowed down. I have only lost 10 lb since my surgery (I'm 5.8" and weighed 258.5 on day of surgery. BMI 38).

I had an appointment with my surgeon 2 days ago. She said my weight loss was on target and there was nothing to worry about. She advised me to eat 4 smaller meals to make room for my late night cravings. But she did advise me to seek help for my sleep issues with my primary care physician.

My second issue is that Soup and pureed foods, like pureed bananas do not make me full. Few nights ago I had 14 oz of lentil Soup and was still hungry. I had another 6 oz afterwards. So total of 20 oz of soup! My surgeon said this was most unusual and that I should stick to solid Proteins instead as they DO infact make me feel really full. She also advised me to have my Protein shake late at night.

Love to have your feedback!

@@Dub thanks for the suggestion, I will try that!

@@Manhattan Mom of Two I am glad to hear that your recovery is going well! I don't think it is uncommon for you to still be hungry after Soup and purees. From what I understand, for most people, those types of foods go right through your sleeve. I think the term is "slider food." I would agree with your surgeon and stick to solid Proteins. I hope your recovery continues to go well!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
