Need a little pep talk

Recommended Posts

I have been off the site for awhile, but need some advise. I am just over a year from my band to sleeve surgery. I have lost over 100 pounds but have been stalled out for the last 3 months. I am excercising minimum of 5 days a week, drinking all my Water, and most days meeting my Protein requirements. I was able to start jigging in February and doing yoga this past month. I have decided to take a few days exercise respite here before school starts for my kiddos and get back to it on Monday. I know my body is changing, I can see it in the mirror and in my clothes, but man, I want the scale to show it. Words of wisdom? Hints / tips!! Thanks!!!

Hi @@tiffanyt I have not even met with my surgeon yet. But I wanted to ask, if you don't mind, you said you went from band to sleeve. Why? My family is suggesting band, but I think I may be better suited for sleeve. Was you not getting the results you needed? Or a complication?... And OMG! 100 lbs is amazing!!!! Keep up the great work. I'm sure the scale will catch up soon. Wish I had advice for you

Jane I had my band in 2008 and lost some weight but had a ton of "issues". I was very sensitive to adjustments and was spending a lot of time in and out if the doctors office. I didn't have complications per say. I had several years where I did nothing with the band and started gaining all my weight back. When I returned to see my surgeon last year (because of heartburn) I decided to convert to the sleeve. BEST Decision I have ever made!!!

My only advice is to stick to it. I had a 3 month long stall starting around 10 months post op. I really thought I was done losing weight. Just like you, I was still losing sizes, but not pounds. But it started again and I lost another 40 pounds rather quickly. Your body fights change, you just have to fight back! Your weight loss will slow, but as long as you do what you are supposed to do it will still happen. Stay positive, eat right, keep up the hard work. You have got this!

@@Jane1979 I originally went to surgeon with the intention of getting LapBand. After he told me that they are removing more than putting in and that 50-60% of lapband patients require a secondary surgery from complications - I quickly changed my mind and will be sleeved instead. Some have had success with the Lapband but they seem to be the minority.

Congratulations, it sounds like you have been doing great.

When you say you are reaching your Protein target most days, that might be someplace where you can do some adjusting. Why not do what you can to reach it every day? For me, it is better to go over by a little bit than to not get in enough.

Since you are exercising regularly, you may even need some extra carbs and fats. Have you talked to your NUT lately about your challenges and goals?

Your NUT would be much better able to advise you based on your own specific needs.

@@Jane1979 - if you are considering the Band, I would check the band to sleeve revision forums on this site. It has a lot of good info from people who had the band and ended up taking it out. I originally went in for the band but my surgeon practically refused to do it and said he even wrote a letter to the FDA about why it should be taken off the market. I'm not saying that people aren't successful with it but just do your research. Some people like the idea of it not being permanent but a lot of people end up with permanent issues from it.

Same for me. I wanted the Lap Band since it's not permanent, but after hearing everything the doctor told me, I decided to go with the sleeve.

@@Jane1979

I'm not one to tell people what to do, but DON'T DO IT. There are so many things you can't eat and most of those things are the healthy foods like meat & salad. You get so sick of being stuck and throwing up that you teach yourself to eat the slider foods. My band has been unfilled now for 3 years and I still vomit up food occasionally. Your family want you to get the band but believe me, your family (like mine) will have to witness you vomiting your food up at almost every meal.

@@tiffanyt

Congrats on the 100+ pounds.

Can I ask if you've tried amping up your workouts?

If you think you're doing ok with your nutrition and Water intake I would suggest really upping the intensity of your exercise. Your body (or metabolism) is not the same as it was 100 or even 50 pounds ago, so you have to push even harder to get it working.

Just a thought. Good luck

My family convinced me that a band would be better because it was less invasive and "reversible". At the time I seriously looked at the sleeve then finally went for the band in 2014. I just revised to the sleeve July 22nd. Wish I had just done the sleeve from the beginning! So much better! Don't make your decision based on someone else's opinion. Do what you feel is best for you.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
