So for the past 2 days now I have been reading everyone's experiences and I applaud each and every one of you for having such discipline and to those struggling, my prayers are with each and every one of you.

I have been overweight my entire life. The past 10 years I have gained and gained so much that I am now just over 350 lbs this is the heaviest I have ever been. I have developed sever arthritis in my left knee and can start to feel my right knee going. Thankfully, I do not have high sugar or blood pressure no issues with cholesterol or anything like that. I do get winded VERY EASILY, stairs are my enemy. Walking in general is painful. Since age 5, I have suffered from Migraines and take a medication (when they strike) that contains caffeine.

I started following a few people on Instagram who had WLS and was amazed at the transformations. Over the past 10 years I have done my fair share of diets losing a few pounds only for it to come right back and then some. I was a member of a gym, I would go a few times a week. But then the arthritis kicked in hard core to where I fall down a lot. Dr after dr mentioned WLS. after finding out recently that my insurance covers it I got the support of my family and currently am set to meet the good Dr on September 9.

I joined this site a couple days ago to see the experiences, ask some questions and everyone has been very helpful! Thank you all!

I understand this surgery is not magic. It requires dedication, hard work and sacrifice.

I adore carbs, bread and Pasta is life!

Coke, ginger ale and soda in general I can not eat without. chocolate... Dear sweet love of my life chocolate. candy not so much cake.

I am willing to part with you all. I know I will miss you and maybe, just maybe we can have a stolen moment together in the future.

The deal breaker for me with this WLS is coffee. I could give a crap about tea and booze. But my beloved coffee I caN not do without. Wait, let me rephrase that. Without coffee , heads will roll. I am willing to give up smoking (cigarettes) I don't do drugs don't care about booze. And willing to leave behind my chocolate and carbs. I hate to say it but coffee may be the thing to stop me from doing this. Thanks for reading.

@@Jane1979 - sounds like great due diligence. I only had to give up coffee for the first few weeks for the staple line to heal. I weaned off of it two weeks ahead of time (because I didn't want the headache), and allowed my stomach to heal. I drink it with stevia and cinnamon now.

So that is not a life time call.

@@OKCPirate from what I am seeing coffee is a huge no no which makes me very sad. I say I won't do the WLS because I am afraid I will have a breakdown and drink my coffee and idk, mess up the whole surgery. I'm putting my life at risk doing it and idk if I have the strength to give it up.

My dr told me that 1-2 cups/day is fine once I am done healing. The problem is that coffee is a diuretic and will interfere with getting enough Water if you drink too much of it and don't add extra Water to your intake to make up the difference.

I switched to Decaf a month before surgery and for 3 months after. Then I started mixing in a bit of regular over the next few months until I was back to all regular coffee. I just drink it with a bit of cream. coffee was my biggest challenge as well, but giving it up temporarily was completely worth the results.

1-2 cups is awesome! So just curious... I'm not a Breakfast person at all. Breakfast for me is like 3 pm. If I was to have coffee with stevia or Splenda, and skip the "breakfast" part would that be okay? Or no way? And I mean during the pre op and post op.

@@Jane1979

What is your surgeon recommending?

I maybe the odd one out, but my surgeon did not want me to get off coffee, as he didn't want me to have post op caffeine withdrawals.

So, I have been drinking my coffee with Stevia and milk since the 2nd day post op, and did not have issues with it.

And, I can only speak for myself, so I can't give advice, only share my own experiences.

Some surgeons want people to stay off coffee due to possible acid reflux issues, and the dehydrating effects.

So, it boils down to what your surgeon has to say about drinking coffee.

Good luck!

I would say find a surgeon that works with you. If coffee is really the deal breaker and you must have it then find a surgeon that allows coffee. There are so many different surgeons that have different requirements and different ways of getting you to where you need to be which is the important part of the whole deal. Everyone is different and has different needs. I'm not saying that you should get one that lets you do whatever you want and doesn't care but find one that works with YOU and doesn't try to fit everyone into the same category.

I was allowed coffee as soon as I got home after surgery after Being sleeved

I have 3 a day I'm 5 months out

now and almost at goal

I was very much upset at the thought of giving up coffee and it was in my mind the last thing I wanted to give up so when my surgeon had no issue with coffee consumption I was a very happy girl.

I'm 8 weeks post op and I make a large iced coffee everyday. sugar free Creamer and equal. Still losing weight and no problems at all. I also drink it from a straw and no problems there either. I've been drinking coffee daily since like week 3 post op.

I was served Decaf the day after surgery in the hospital.

I had to give up coffee for three months after surgery. It was hard! But worth it. I'm back to my regular 4-6 cups per day and it doesn't seem to be hurting me a bit. I'm over 200 lbs down, 3+ years out of surgery, and I'm perfectly hydrated even though I rarely drink Water and get most of my Fluid intake from black coffee. *gasp*

People who tell you that coffee is dehydrating are either misinformed or actively lying to try to scare you into compliance. That's an old myth. There are good reasons to give up coffee for a short period of time after surgery, or even for the long term if it turns out that your new system can't handle it. For example, coffee is acidic and hard on healing wounds! So bathing your newly chopped up stomach in it is not such a great idea. But put aside the "it's dehydrating" reason because it really just isn't. If anyone tells you otherwise, ask them to show you the published, peer reviewed scientific studies backing up their claims.

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/06/30/milk-and-other-surprising-ways-to-stay-hydrated/?_r=0

("In other words, coffee and beer are not dehydrating, despite common beliefs to the contrary." -- from an article about a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Yes, I drink brewed coffee in a travelling mug, with a straw, yes .... LOL

I make a tight seal with my straw, so there is no extra air coming in, and drinking it this way reduces the caffeine stains on my teeth.

So, real coffee till about 2 pm, then I move onto Decaf for the rest of the day, as I don't want to be awake all night.

I love my coffee!

So happy that my surgeon had no issues with my coffee habits :)

I was only without my coffee for a few weeks....I stopped a couple of weeks before surgery and stayed away from it for about three weeks after surgery....at that point my doc cleared me to have it again if I so desired.....and I so desired! I drink it everyday!

This surgery was the best thing I have every done for myself! I have not regretted it for even one second! Good luck to you.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
