Confession: I fell off the wagon.

Recommended Posts

I am confessing to falling off the exercise wagon.

I quit smoking 7 days ago and that first week I was pretty depressed. I just didn't CARE about going to the gym. Not at all. I was just giving myself lots of permission to do anything I wanted....except smoke. Ok...so that worked. I'm still smoke free.

Well, now it's time to get back at it. Enough rest. EXCEPT that Saturday I had a massage and the masseuse was doing some wierd quad stretches on me and has apparently hurt my lower back quite badly. I have a weak back anyway. It WAS getting so much better with exercise and now, today, I can barely walk. It's gonna take another 2-3 days before I can get to the gym.

Somebody tell me that it's OK...that I am a new person...that I haven't fallen into my old trap ....and that I"ll be back at the gym in no time.

I need a drill sargeant to come kick my ass by Thursday if my back is better. Any volunteers?

Well, I'm hardly the drill seargant type. LOL! :) But I just want to say it's okay. You realize there's a problem and you know the solution...just doing it. You're not a failure and you haven't relapsed into your old ways. You have made a huge decision w/stopping smoking, which is a big deal in itself (GO YOU!!). And to top it off, you're hurt right now. Just look at the situation for what it is. Try not to internalize it so much. Stop beating yourself up. You are doing FANTASTIC!!!!

You'll be up and running before you know it. Give yourself a few days to recover from the back pain, and then get back in the gym. Take it easy once you're there, though. Don't overdo it and try to make up for lost time.

Hope this helps!

a week or so away from the gym will not spoil everything you've worked so hard for...when your ready get back in there. your muscles will definatly remember what you were doing before your "break", also, congrats on the not smoking...that's the most important thing anyways...

Yea Terry! You're doing the #1 best thing for your health by quitting smoking. WAY TO GO. Protect that goal with everything you have, even if it means sacrificing exercise for the short term. If you can, fill your desire to smoke with exercise, but if you can't, just do anything you have to do not to smoke. You'll be back to your exercise goals in no time.

You ROCK! Woohoo, Terry!

Thanks, Ya'll. I hope you're all right. One of the main motivators for quitting was so that I could push my cardio workouts .... I seemed to be limited to 40-45 mins. max. I felt I could do better if I just didn't get so tired!

I'll let you know how I do. For now my back is still tender.

Terry----

You know my friend, we are listening, and understand the stresses involved in quitting the smoking thing. And we understand the back---btw---the 2 CAN be connected!!! The release of toxins can be seriously painful I am told! BUT....when you are better we will be riding your a$$ until you are back to busting it!!!!

It's ok, recognizing the problem is half way to conquering it---you know you need to be working out, and you will be again as soon as your body is able. You will do it just to test yourself and see how your endurance improves.

You keep me in line---you think I will do less for you??? Puuhhhleeeze!!!!!!

Hey girl....in that "other" program i belong to there is a sayng, "First Things First". your focus now is on quitting smoking which will require you to be gentle with yourself in the beginning.

also it would be crazy to exercise when your back is hurt. you could seriously hurt yourself if you do go when you are healing.

i know how you feel about slipping into old patterns. i had a flip out last week worrying about eating crap. but i find with the band....it gives us a little extra push to get back on track.

give yourself off this week and let your back heal.

then next week (if your back is better) you can start up again.

see ya tomorrow

p.s. i love your honesty

I went back to the gym today for just a light 30 minute workout. Guess what? I had a hard time getting my heart rate UP!! Usually I'm kinda fighting to get it down to my target of 125-130. You think quitting smoking has helped already?? Even though it's only been 11 days?

I softened up my exercise goals for September a bit. I'd rather exceed them than not meet them. Maybe October I'll try to hit it hard again.

Thanks for all your support, lovies! Ya'll are the best!

Awesome!!!! Glad you're up and moving again. Good idea to take it easy for a little bit.

And I would bet that since you've stopped smoking, that definitely is affecting your heartrate.

I am just so proud of you for quitting! :clap2:

Be blessed and keep up the great work. :(

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
