So I have C Difficile. I have had it for several weeks if not months.

Only found out today.

Have exposed all of my family.

Just a heads up, your GP here in the UK does not test stool for CDiff unless specifically requested.

Ugh! I'm so sorry! I know that was a concern with the testing the past couple weeks. What is the treatment for it, antibiotics? I know those can goof up your GI system even more.

I swear, I think you have had almost every complication imaginable! Totally sucks. I really hope your team is suitably freaked out by all you have gone through and they get their heads together to come up with a good plan of monitoring you and checking EVERYTHING; organs, labs, nutrients, etc.

My husband had this from taking a particular type of antibiotic for an ingrown toe nail. While they were giving him antibiotics to get rid of it, we made sure he ingested as much yogurt or other yogurt type drink containing active s. thermophilus. He could not get rid of the diarrhea until he added that. The little 'shots' of probiotic drinks often contain it, but he made sure to drink as much as he could. Sorry to hear about all these troubles. At least you have a specific issue that can be fought and fixed. Good luck!

I will definitely get some of this! Do you take it while taking the antibiotics or afterward?

Thank you for your help!

Two weeks of massive amounts of metronidazole!

Massive pills that can't be crushed either. A little bit frightened that they might get stuck!

Today my bariatric nurse did say that it has been "one thing after another!"

And no, told me to go to my GP and let them handle it!!!!

What annoys me is that I have had this so long. And my GP, surgeon and the infectious control team all discussed this but no one called me. I only found out because I phoned them yesterday and they rang me back today. Even my bariatric nurse didn't know!

Wow.

I worked long-term acute ICU, so I had my share of c.diff patients. You have a tough row to hoe, definitely. But at least you now know that your diarrhea can be resolved. Most patients can get c.diff cleared with a round or two of the strong antibiotics. If yours does not clear, as gross as it sounds, I strongly recommend looking into a fecal transplant. The remission rate for c.diff with transplant is over 90%. They don't do it right off the bat because most will respond to the antibiotics, and the transplants are a lot more difficult and people are resistant to them.

I would want to find out if there is a cluster of c.diff in your bariatric unit. If so, then there have been some lapses in the cleaning and isolation protocols at your facility, and this may be a contributing factor to why so many of your friends in the same center have had problems. If c.diff is colonized in that facility, other bugs may be as well.

C.diff is certainly highly contagious, but if your family isn't experiencing that horrible watery diarrhea then they probably have not contracted it. The labs at my facilities wouldn't even run the test on samples we sent if the stool was formed, because if it is, it's not c.diff (at least that's their position). It's really only contagious through handling the stool, so if your family hasn't been cleaning up after you, they likely haven't been exposed.

I certainly wish you the best of luck in dealing with this!!

Thank you! I was certainly worried. My grandson is severely autistic non verbal and how we would get a stool sample off of him, I don't know!

I stayed at their house for two days because I have been so ill and I am worried sick that I might have infected them. Little hands and toilet seats etc. They don't always wash their hands well enough!

So I cried all morning because my little granddaughter was expecting me to have a short visit with her today but they have told me to stay isolated from them. She is only five, it's hard for her to understand and she worries because Grandma is always sick and "shrinking", bless her.

I have texted my bariatric friends to let them know that I have C diff.

Unfortunately, cleanliness and hygiene in hospitals here (my NHS one), is not to the same standard as in other places so who knows.

I have no idea where I got it but I have been back to my surgeon three times with diarrhea.

Really dreading the antibiotic course and what do I do about moving house? Now I have infectious runs!

Bleach is your friend. It will kill the c.diff, so use it on every bleach-safe surface, especially in the bathroom. There are a couple of other cleaners that can be used on surfaces that can't be bleached, but I'm pretty sure they're not standard cleaners, it's special stuff we had in the hospital.

Alcohol gels WILL NOT KILL IT. Make sure everyone who comes into contact with you knows that. Soap and Water, with the soap being used for 30 seconds before rinsing, is the only way to get it off your hands. Even if someone wears gloves, they still need to wash their hands.

I don't know what to advise as far as moving house, unless you can put it off until the c.diff is cleared, or if you can have other people do the packing and moving after you have someone come in to do a deep cleaning of the house?

@@GinaCampbell I'm surprised to hear that you're just being tested for C Diff. I thought a few weeks ago you mentioned that this is what they suspected and planned to admit you. I would have thought you were told to take precautions back then. Boy - you just can't catch a break!

They took the stool sample, blood sample and sent me home. Nutritionist said the results were normal back then so either they didn't test for C Diff that time, forgot to tell me that time, who knows. GP did a test on 28th June but didn't test for C Diff. Surgeon tested for C Diff on 29th June.

And no, I was told that if there was anything wrong, they would phone me. They forgot to phone me. So no, even though they tested for C diff, I wasn't told to take any precautions and my poop sample bottle was handled without gloves after I was told to "just leave it on the desk love".

I can't decide if God is trying to tell me to not move house or if the devil is trying to rob me of my dream house!

Answers on a postcard please!

Thank you so much for the info. Will get bleach, and lots of it.

I can re schedule the big move (furniture etc) for later and just pack away here in quarantine.

Can the moving guys catch it from just moving the boxes and furniture?

But there is no guarantee how long I will have C Diff. I have heard it can be tough to shift and I will be paying double rent until I get going.

Didn't see this coming. I thought that I was clear.

Nevermind!

Will definitely hire a team of cleaners for after the move!

I am so tired.

I am still confused. Won't taking all these antibiotics leave me open to re populating with C Diff?

What the hell? "Leave it on the desk, dear"?!?!? Eww! What's the safety standard over there?

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
