anyone have bad GERD at the beginning, but it got better?

Recommended Posts

I was at my PCP's today and she gave me a funny look when I said the dexilant I'm taking wasn't taking care of all the acid and that I was taking two pepcid every night too. That's unusual I'm sure, but how unusual is it for a sleeve patient?

I've had a local bariatric surgeon tell me that I will have no choice but to revise to bypass if the GERD is this bad at this point. My surgeon tells me nothing - just that it may improve, or might not.

Is there anyone here who had really bad GERD after surgery that improved over time - even went away?

Please, give me some hope. I really don't want another surgery.

I had it for two weeks after the third week. It went away after a while but I used gas strips to get rid of them at the time. And make sure you stay up for a while after eating. I hated the taste of those strips so I would roll them and take them as a pill. Took care of the problem in minutes.

I can and I will.

Are you talking about gas? or gastric reflux? I'm talking about acid reflux.

I had minor acid reflux for years when eating highly acidic foods, but since the surgery I haven't had any. I had a small hiatal hernia that was repaired during surgery so not sure if that's what helped it or if it's just the fact that I eat far less now. Perhaps a combo of both.

I have seen others mention GERD post-op on here before and it seems for most (though not all) it goes away after some time. Most of those people seemed to have minor GERD though, nothing as severe as what it seems you are having.

If you can't get any answers from your surgeon (which just sucks) I would maybe check with another surgeon (it seems you have already started down this path).

Honestly....sounds like a bad situation because other surgeons won't want to "take over" from another's work without being paid for it and your PCP is going to try to direct you back to your surgeon. The only other suggestion would be to see if your PCP can refer you to a specialist and perhaps they can tell you whether or not it's the sleeve and if there's another way to help without having to go through another surgery.

Hope it all works out for you....would love to hear what you find out...and sorry that you are having to deal with all of the back-and-forth...somehow that seems to be the worst part of this...and that just shouldn't be the case.

I can say that personally I wouldn't put up with much of the back-and-forth. If I couldn't get some answers or relief quickly, I would be in the surgeons office demanding some much needed attention!

I had really bad reflux that lasted for a few weeks.... it got so bad that i had to see the surgeon, he suggested that i double the dose.. once in the morning and once in the evening.

I tried this and it made it worse! So the next day i took nothing... gone..... turns out for me it was the PPI that was causing the reflux!

3 months post op now, i haven't had it since i went off it.

How far out are you?

I had terrible GERD after my sleeve with hernia repair. I was taking a double dose of PPI's for 4 months post op. My stomach burned so much it kept me up at night. Now I am 6 months post on and like magic I have NO problems anymore. I am down to 1 PPI per day now and I'm thinking soon I'll be off all together. It's almost like I had a over production of stomach acid after surgery and my body has finally figured out I don't need all of it anymore.

I had my surgery on June 28 and since the day of surgery I have had nothing but problems. The acid reflux I have is nothing I have ever experienced before. It is causing my mouth to Water and I am throwing up everything I put in my stomach. I'm even throwing up Water. I can't seem to stay hydrated. I am taking the PPI 2x a day along with Carafate and it's not making a difference. I am still in the liquid stage with a few pieces of cheese a day. Of course I'm losing weigh but it's because I'm not eating., My fear is I will develop an ulcer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. When does this go away? Does it go away

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
