How much time did you take off work?

Recommended Posts

I took off 8/15 until 9/2. I am considering taking more time but will wait until my post op 9/1 to make my decision. I'm still in pain and tired but anxious to go back to work.

I work in the medical field. I applied for FMLA and short term disability. I took off the full 6 weeks my surgeon suggested. I had pushing, pulling and lifting restrictions. I am glad I took 6 weeks off to heal. I walked every day during the six weeks I was off.

I think the amount of time you need to take off depends on the type of job you do. If you sit at a desk all day and work on a computer you will probably be able to go back sooner. If your job requires a lot of physical stuff it will be longer.

I took off 2 weeks, but I sit behind a desk all day and my schedule is flexible I can arrive and leave when I want. I agree it depends on your job and the type of work you do.

Personally I'm going to ask for a month off. I should be having surgery sometime in Jan or feb of next year. I want the week before off because I'll be on Protein shakes only and I don't wanna pass out or anything because my job is mostly standing. That'll leave 3 weeks after the surgery to recover and get used to the diet before going back to work. Remember, you need time to adjust to eating and drinking schedules too.

My insurance only approved me for 4 weeks. My surgery day was Aug 24 and I go back Sept 20. Actually I don't mind that only because I'm hoping they have some overtime at work, lol. But mostly, I'm sure I'll be fine when I actually go back and I don't want to lose my passwords to my systems.

On a odd note, I had to pack my desk before I left because I'm getting a new cube when I get back.

I only requested 4 weeks but my doctor recommend 6 weeks so my job just said for me to let them know in advance if I need the additional 2 weeks. My job also recommended I apply for STD and FMLA which were both approved so I'm happy about that. This first week has been interesting with today being the worse. I guess my body finally realized what happened and had a moment of spazzing out. LOL But I'm back to feeling good so I'm so thankful for that and these weeks off.

I have a desk job, so little to no lifting is required. I had surgery on a Monday and returned the following Monday. I stayed overnight in the hospital and never filled my pain RX. But everyone is different.

I have my surgery on 9/28 (Hooray!) I have a question about driving post-op... my surgery team suggests not driving for two weeks after surgery. That seems kind of impossible with two kids, but I was wondering what people did. Would it be because you lack the stamina or energy? or something else? Please advise! Cheers!

Most of my job is being on the phone and I can I work from the home office if I need to... so nothing to crazy. I planned to take 2 weeks. My surgery was on a Tuesday, I was home on Thursday. By the next Tuesday I felt fine to sit at my desk and take a few calls. The second week I got gassed real easy so I would work for a couple of hours then take a break. I had no complications and my recovery has been pretty easy so I'm sure that helps.

As for driving, my Dr's prime concern was driving while on pain meds. I only took meds in the hospital, and then the first two nights at home to help me sleep. I was ready to drive a few days later. My wife had to handle all the kid-taxi-ing.

You should not drive while on the prescription pain meds, and you should have good range of motion without pain.

I had Surgery on Tuesday and went back to work the following Monday. I manage a medical practice though so I had the ability to spend more time at my desk. I worked 42 hours that week, about 10 less than my usual work weeks but I was trying not to push myself too far.

took off two weeks. went back last week but it was rough. might end up trying to adjust to part time for a few weeks or take more time. honestly should have taken friends suggestions to wait until your able to properly eat some things for energy, i can't even handle Protein shakes yet.

Thank you for coming back. My boss said "you take all the time you need, you should be ready to come back in two weeks". Lol! I was almost considering it.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
