What are these new hiccup/burp things?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed others have experienced these weird hiccup-y/burp things after surgery. Not uncomfortable but they are totally new to my body and I can't figure out if its my stomach spasming, gas being expelled or something else....

It could be a couple of different things. I burped A LOT the first few days after surgery. There was gas in me that needed to come out, and that's how it chose to come.

Now that I'm a few weeks out and eating real food, I still burp sometimes. It's usually an indicator that I'm eating too fast or too much. Sometimes it's a weird hiccup instead. I've gotten them far less since I slowed down my eating drastically.

Your new stomach is adjusting, and your body is adjusting to it. Gurgles, burps, and hiccups are all going to be normal.

I am 3 months post op as of July 7, 2016. I had hiccups during the first couple of months several times a day which was totally out of the ordinary for me. I have read that many people that have had the sleeve surgery have had this issue also. I still have hiccups on occasion but it is improved tremendously.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
