What happens if I eat something like rice and Beans or Mashed potatoes being 7 days post op. ? Will I puke it up or would they're be other consequences? Also for people who had the surgery a few months ago do things get better? Are you able to eat food now and feel full and normal ?

First off, I have to say: eating foods that your stomach is not ready for is a huge no no. Especially things like rice, that can get stuck in your new incisions and cause a life-threatening infection. Honestly, puking and dumping is the least of your worries when it comes to eating things your recently-cut up stomach is not ready for. Mashed potatoes I have seen on many people's pureed diet plans, though I was told not to eat them for a few months as avoiding starches was one of the goals of my post-op diet.

I'll be 11 months post op in ten days, and the answer is YES, it does get easier! The absolute best thing you can do for yourself right now is to follow your meal plan and teach yourself not to give in to cravings, so later down the line when you're at goal or near it, you can slowly reintroduce certain foods that were a no-go in the beginning, like rice and potatoes (which should still be kept to a minimum), and then eventually be able to eat a varied, healthy diet that nourishes you and satisfies you. Now is the time to establish these good habits, as well as the time you must focus on healing. I can honestly say that a good chunk of people I've met who had complications had them because they gave in to their cravings and ate things they shouldn't have, or took nsaids, or ingested caffeine while their stomach was still healing, etc. These rules and guidelines are in place so that you can be the safest and healthiest possible. Follow them!

How are you feeling otherwise? My first few weeks were completely terrible, but it really does get exponentially better. As someone who is far past your stage, I can truly say that dealing with being bored with what you eat is 100% worth it in the long run. In a few months, you'll be eating like a normal healthy person (albeit less and smaller portions) and you'll be feeling great. Hang in there. :)

Thank you! I have been reading messages from others eating mashed potatoes and other starches, taking ibuprofen when Tylenol is a substitute and it scares me. I did this for myself. To be healthy and thin and to live longer than I would have. I am only 11 days post op but I am being creative with my puréed foods and not bored at all. I use my 2 servings of milk as my Snacks and as a tool to take my Vitamins and other drugs every day. While I do look forward to the next stage; soft foods I am in no rush to move too quickly. I do not have any cravings so I guess I'm lucky. Well I have one craving. When I see someone with a glass of Coke my mouth waters! I never drank Coke but I guess knowing that my surgeon believes there is a correlation to the bubbles in carbonated drinks possibly expanding the pouch after time - well it makes me not want to touch it. I have 4 good bottles of champagne in my fridge that I am giving away to friends and family.

So while this is a huge change, a lifelong change; I was very much aware of it before surgery and I will do everything I can to make new, better, healthier habits. I think I read once that it takes 3 weeks to develop a habit and I am using my 3 weeks of medical leave to develop the best habits I can think of so going back to work is an easier transition .

Good luck to you all.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
