Increasing to 90 grams of Protein?! WTH!

Recommended Posts

I went to my 5 month appointment today and was down 92 lbs! :) I'm super excited about my progress but still have a long way to go.

I told my doctor that I have been feeling tired and sluggish. I have been getting in the 60 grams of Protein that was recommended but I have been doing Zumba class 3 x a week. And I'm only getting in about 800 calories a day. Most everything I put in my mouth has Protein, then some veggies and very occasionally carbs.

So, my doctor said that because I was working out that I needed about 90 grams of protein....WHAT THE HECK! I can hardly get in my 60 grams! I do drink Premier Protein shakes sometimes but I honestly hate the protein taste of almost all shakes.

I have no idea how to get in all this protein! Any ideas would be great. Thanks so much.

I was getting in 90 grams of Protein pretty easily each day at 5 months.

What Protein are you are you eating?

If you want to keep and gain any muscles mass you need more protein or your body is just going to break down the protein you have, which is your muscles. 60 grams of protein is the bare minimum to live, and that is okay if you are slug, but not if you are active.

I normally eat an egg and sausage scramble in the morning, then left overs like grilled chicken and a few veggies for lunch and then a lean meat with veggies for dinner. I snack on cheese or beef Jerky or Protein crunch bars if I need a snack. So, I try to only eat Protein packed stuff.

And I don't want to feel sluggish...I want to have energy. Just not sure how to get it all in.

I never could get into the Protein shakes. However, once I discovered Protein powder cakes I consistently hit my Protein goals. There are several recipes out there, and many on here as well. It's just your favorite Protein Powder, some non-dairy liquid coffee Creamer, and some baking powder. I also added natual Peanut Butter or bran to change it up. Either more protein or added Fiber being the goal.

Also, if you don't already, learn to love fish. tuna from a pouch or can is great as are the bags of frozen whitefish filets. Bake them and you have a protein dense low calorie dinner.

All the Proteins you listed are dry dense Proteins. I would never eat my Protein goals eating grilled chicken, or eggs. eggs are too dense with too little Protein. Sausage, depending on the kind it is, is too high in calories and not enough protein. Turkey bacon might be a better option than sausage.

So you like seafood? Fish is soft and very moist, you can eat more of it.

And if you are working out, why not drink a Protein shake after you finish your workout?

I also eat these protein brownies http://www.eatmeguiltfree.com/ The premade brownies don't taste as good as the ones you make yourself, but they are nice to have around. They are better than Protein Bars and more like real food.

I do a couple of eggs and meat in the morning, but I put pipingrock.com unflavored Protein powder in my coffee. I do a greek yogurt around 10:30 with more powder. If you do that, it will get you around 25 more grams per day. A few ounces of meat 2 hours before or after dinner will get you to that goal.

@@BigViffer is right on! That's my standby too (learned about them here). In fact I just had one with my Syntrax Matrix mint cookie powder because I realized I hadn't hit my 90-100g for the day. I don't always use non-dairy creamer, I use Water or sugar free Torani Syrup. And I often put Fage Greek yogurt as "frosting" or another no sugar added Greek yogurt. I also like to smash up a half banana into it for moisture.

It does take work for me to get there as well. Constant vigilance. And I can't get it all in without supplementing. I do either a shake or a cake or a Quest or Power Crunch bar daily. Sometimes like today I do two. And I'm 2 1/2 years out!

Greek yogurt is another stand by in general for me. I eat at least one a day (good for the bones too). Jerky (just make sure it isn't one like Krave that adds a LOT of sugar) cold cuts rolled up with a squirt of mustard and thin sliced cheese. tuna with mayo or mustard or (again) plain Greek yogurt.

I get frozen pre cooked shrimp with a little cocktail sauce.

Oops, wasn't done there yet. I drink a couple glasses of milk a day, which is an easy Protein consumption because you are drinking it. Also like someone else said, pound for pound you can't beat shrimp.

Congratulations on the weight loss.

My goal has been 100 grams since day one. It was hard but doable right after surgery. As far out as you are now it should be fairly easy with some planning.

Keep in mind that you will need to divide it up and have no more than 25-30 grams at a time.

3 Premier Protein shakes = 90 grams.

You could have 3 meals of 20-25 grams of protein and 1 Protein shake and one or 2 small protein Snacks.

You could have 4-5 small protein-rich meals of about 20 grams of protein.

Just make sure you record your food and plan and it is pretty easy to do.

Ok I just did some math... Protein has 4 calories per gram. So if most of your 800 daily calories are protein even taking "most" as 3/4 that's 600 calories from protein which would be 150g of protein. What am I missing? If you are only getting 60g that's only 240 calories which isn't "most" of 800 calories.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
