Is my BMI too low for the sleeve?

Recommended Posts

This seems like the best option for me. I want to have this or edits so badly and my ideal weight they say (for my height and age) is 115-130. I haven't weighed that since freshman year! My BMI is currently 27 which is high but not considered obese. Will I be able to find a surgeon who will perform the procedure? Is it even healthy at this stage of the game.

Thanks for any help,

Newbie

You could probably find a doctor in Mexico. At a 27 bmi, it doesn't seem like a good option for you.

Have you tried Keto?

I wouldn't do any permanent life altering surgery at that bmi.

You definitely will not qualify for insurance. More than likely you won't find a reputable surgeon in the US that would do it period. Your best bet is probably to look at going to Mexico. But personally, I would never consider taking the surgical risks and complications including leaks, abcesses, internal bleeding, strictures, twisting, GERD, and even death for just 2 BMI points.

Have you looked at the Obera or other balloon options? Non surgical, reversible and specifically made for low bmi patients.

Most doctors want you to be at least 100 lbs overweight.

Who says that's your ideal weight? If you're going by the bmi chart, forget that silly thing. It's bunk. With a bmi of 27, and considering wls, I think you may have bigger problems to address.... You do not need wls, but you may want to look into therapy.

Your definitely way to low for any American doctor to operate on you. And I feel like a decent doctor in Mexico wouldn't operate either. I'd be wary of one who would to be honest.

My bmi was 2 points lower than what is acceptable to have surgery via my insurance. I had high blood pressure and diabetes so my surgeon gave me 2 options...I could either continue with my weight loss through a supervised non-surgical program or I could elect to have him push the surgery through due to my having the high blood pressure and diabetes. It was my choice and I opted or the surgery. He was completely on board and I had my surgery this past Feb. Good luck!!!

Have you considered doing the HCG Protocol as an alternative to surgery?

Please do not consider weight loss surgery at your BMI. BMI scale is not realistic. Your weight is probably at most of our GOAL weights. You could end up losing far too much weight and risk serious complications from a major surgery. It's not worth it at your weight.

My goal weight puts me at a BMI of 26.4. I have been there before. I looked fantastic and was the picture of health.

The only surgeon who would operate on someone your size would be the back door shady type just out to take anyone's money and damn the consequences. I wouldn't trust any surgeon who would say yes to you. I really think you should seek some mental/emotional help for whatever issue it is you are really having.

If you are dead set on having WLS, come back when you are 80-100 pounds overweight.

The reason that you wouldn't qualify is that in the long run it would do more harm to you under the circumstances than good.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
