Am in a Pre-Op classes program for 24-weeks; the last two weeks of which SoCal Kaiser puts you in the liquid diet pre-surgery...my mentality is to enjoy something every day that I won't be able to have (sparkling water/CITRUS/drinking with a straw all I want et al.). Don't want to get to the end of this 24-week program and feel so deprived that my "food funeral" is an all-out binge. One of my goals over the next 24-weeks is to disassociate the feelings of "good excitement/love" when food is in front of me and try to rewire my brain to think of it as fuel. Really want to break the emotional attachment with it even more so than I have over the last two years of psychological treatment.

Since they want us to take weight off, I've been very conscious of what I'm putting in my mouth, but have one meal a day that is well thought out and simply decadent, or things that I truly like. i.e., I will have (2) liquid Meal Replacements + fruit/veggies if I'm too hungry, and then enjoy a very good real meal/treat (last night was one carnitas burrito with guacamole). Tonight I had dark chocolate covered frozen banana medallions. With that balance I've already lost fifty pounds, so it is working.

The only fast food meal that I want to have before the six months is up—In 'n Out. The dairy will make me sick as all get-out, but mark my words, one Animal Style fry, one double-double, and one chocolate shake will be in my stomach all together one last time at some point. I'm not sure "when," but it will be soon!

Getting in these "last meals" in quantity is a great idea!!! Eat, drink and be merry!!!

I went with the ever popular pizza. A whole small roni, shroom, hamburger and onion with xcheese. Then I had 1.5 slices of just pizza toppings at 9 weeks post op and it was just as tasty and plenty satisfying.

I never felt a need for a fattening high caloric "last meal"; I just had a sensible supper.

This was only a pre-WLS diet, I wasn't on death row. I knew that after the post WLS diet phases I can enjoy the same foods again, just in smaller quantities and for many, less frequently.

I already enjoyed too many high calorie meals in the past, which helped contribute to my obesity.

Were all the toppings okay for you post op?

Same. I felt as if I'd eaten more than my share in my 40 years on earth. I was so ready to start my weight loss "journey", I started my pre-op diet two weeks early. I was on it for a full month pre-op.

Never regretted a moment of it, either.

At three years out, there are very few foods I can't eat, and I don't even want those any more.

That said, it's a very unpopular trend around here to advise people to follow their doctor's plans, to not over indulge, to think about the logic of splurging on unhealthy choices just before WLS...

So my new opinion is -- EAT what you want!

Personally? I'm in it to win it.

There are foods that I can not eat---now 5yrs out. I doubt if I will ever be able to eat them.

To be able to enjoy a favorite meal after completing all of the requirements was not only a personal, but was a strongly encouraged by my bariatric team.

Having a food funeral was, in fact on my list of "to do's" given to me by my Bariatric Center of Excellence team.

Not once did they say, imply or treat me like I was being "rewarded like a dog". (how insulting to my dog). But each to their own...

Make your own personal WLS journey joyful. the choice is yours.

What food can you not eat 5 years out? Thank you so much for this post. Really made me feel better about eating like I did.

Girl...you know your body best!! Only YOU can make decisions for you. I knew I couldn't mentally handle a huge meal before my pre-op so I didn't have one. I knew that if I started the "mourning" cycle for foods, I might not have stopped. I found a time I was mentally prepared to start my diet and I just dove in. YOU DO YOU!! :D

You didn't ask me, but I can't eat ice cream. It comes out both ends within minutes. It used to be a favorite food. Rice makes my vomit as does Pasta and more than 4 french fries. bread gets stuck. Cream based Soups if ejected forcefully from again, both ends. It's such a horrible experience, I no longer want any of the above and I don't miss them. :D

As for the dog comment? It's cute that someone chose to be offended my my personal motivator. I got to 264 pounds rewarding myself with food. Birthday? ICE CREAM!! New client? Thick crust pizza with extra toppings! Bonus? Steak dinner with all the trimmings! Vacations? drinks non-stop, and all the junk I could eat (it was only for a week, right?).

My dog gets treats for cleaning her room. (She picks up her toys and puts them in her toybox.) She gets treats for standing still when we bathe her. She gets treats for tricks, she gets treats for obeying when people are over.

It's not an insult to the dog at all (she likes it!). I can't even begin to imagine how it could be construed as such.

The list is too long for my liking, but is probably a blessing in disguise:

Pasta

rice

sticky bread

ketsup

rich food

overly sweet food

overly spicy food

anything fried

chicken

Those are the worst. I consider it a good thing now. Not being able to eat those foods, keeps me on track and loyal to my sleeve.

Don't you dare feel guilty, Girl! Enjoy the moment. Enjoy the memories for your life time . There will be times during your journey when you will come upon a "bump in the road" or even "hit a wall". Memories of your food funeral will let you smile when smiling may be the last thing you though you could do.

Do I regret my WLS? Nope. Do I regret having my food funeral. NEVER! :)

I looked at this as a lifestyle change, so I had no desire to have a pig out session. I just wanted to get the show on the road so I could get rid of my diabetes and high blood pressure. I'd also quit smoking a couple of months before. I didn't reward the milestone with a cigarette.

In the 30+ years I've been dieting, the ONE rule has always been NEVER REWARD YOURSELF WITH food.

Get your mind right from the start, or it will be a long, hard road.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
