7 days Post Op! Result: no Energy

Recommended Posts

Today marks a week... Since my surgery. And I stayed 2days at the hospital. I didn't feel up to going home, and my surgeon told me to stay another night if I wanted to. And I did. I don't know how they expect you to go home after one night in the hospital. I didn't realize how hard this was going to be on my body. I don't feel great, I feel weak and have regret. I'm very emotional and keep asking my self "what did I do to myself. I might of been fat but I felt better than I do now. I really hope this changes.. And I regain energy and feel somewhat normal again. I thought I could go back to work this past Monday, which would of been 5 days after surgery but no.. I got so sick when going back to work. It was so hard to drive to work and to keep my head up. Anybody out there with advice or same experience. I need some help!

@@curlysue86 Hi, they told me I would be tired later but not right after my surgery. Take your pain meds if needed. Are you walking? It's very important to get rid of all the gas in your body, also make sure you get enough Water, sip all day. Make sure you are taking your multi Vitamin, Iron and B12. Hope you feel better soon.

Listen to me - HEALING IS HARD WORK. Even if you're not feeling like doing much, just the process your body is going thru to heal is enough to tire you out.

Your only job should be drinking enough Water and getting your Protein as much as possible.

Give yourself a little credit. You had major surgery a week ago. Your body is about to do some amazing things for you - give it some time to get ready. Rest. Hydrate.

It's tough but it just gets better. You'll turn the corner soon - like probably this weekend - and then it'll be smooth sailing.

After surgery, you are very tired for at least a few weeks! Just make sure you do as the surgeon told you; sip sip sip, walk walk walk and be sure to get in as much Protein as you can, and take your vitamins!!! These are the most important things to do right after surgery (and honestly for the rest of your life now). I did not go back to work for 2 weeks. First, I couldn't drive for at least a week until I got clearance at my 1 week check up with the surgeon.

You will feel better; it takes about 3-4 weeks before you feel somewhat normal again. Just know that the first month is a bit rough, but after that things continually get better and better.

Good Luck!

I am right there with you curlysue! I had mine on the 16th. Went to work Tuesday and ended up making it half a day before coming home and crying. Today I was in such pain I was dizzy. Plus I see people saying "I've lost 14 lbs since my surgery" and I'm over here going "I've lost 5 and all my energy". I just want to sleep!!

You are dizzy because you are not getting in enough water! Dizziness is an indicator of dehydration. Why are you pushing yourself to go back to work so quickly? Also, if you are not pushing to get your Protein in, your body will not heal as quickly either. This was major surgery! You need to take time to heal! I was anxious to get back to work as well after surgery, but I did take 2 weeks off because I knew one week would not be enough and I'd be tired and no energy.

Please, take the time to relax and allow your body to heal! This is a marathon; not a sprint. And if you only lost 5 lbs since surgery, then you only lost 5 lbs. Don't be in such a hurry. The weight doesn't just magically fall away.

@@shannon.crigger You are only a week out from major surgery - including not only Bypass but gallbladder removal. That's more than a week recovery time. You will end up hospitalized. Please rest, drink plenty of fluids and get your Protein and Vitamins. Does your employer or State have any short term disability insurance? It's not safe to return to work this soon. I believe I was out 4 weeks just from gallbladder surgery. Take care of yourself!

Thank you! Everybody for all the great tips!! This really helps me. I have to admit, I'm not drinking enough Water.. It's so hard to get it all down. I never was a Water drinker. But I am going to try this again tonight and sip sip sip on water and all day tomorrow too. I'm day 9 and I actually can say it's better than day 7. I feel better. But still have major migraines..it could be coming from the lack of water. How does everyone do there vitamin's? Do y'all use the chewies?? Or powder or liquids.

Thank you, to everyone for all your tips .. It's been a great tool for me things are getting better.

PS. But miss Chick-fil-A hopefully down the road I'll be able to have a small portion of nuggets eventually. For a special treat.

curlysue86, I had headaches in the beginning after surgery as well. Your body is adjusting with hormones and everything else. They will get better. Do you live in a region where allergies are a problem? Could be that as well.

Vitamins, in the beginning, should be chewable, but I was instructed not to use gummies because it can get stuck and block the new opening from the stomach. I don't know if this applies to sleeved peeps as well (I had RNY). I use a chewable multi-Vitamin, a sublingual B12 pill, and at the time chewable Calcium citrate. I did have a capsule for my Iron. I also take Biotin (small pearl like pill), B-Complex with Vit. C (small pill), Vitamins A, C, and D3 (all little gel like pill), and my blood pressure and anti-depressant. Of course I took these pills according to directions I received, so throughout the day and evening. I also take Metformin for diabetes. Those pills are kind of big so I was breaking them in half and over an hour time frame taking each piece. I now can swallow the full pill without feeling like it will come back up.

Word of advice regarding any type of pain pills. With RNY we are not allowed to ever take Ibuprofen because it is harsh on the stomach. So Tylenol it is. I used some Children's liquid tylenol in the very beginning, and I learned my lesson. WAY too much sugar and it caused me to dump. I never made that mistake again! So be cautious with anything liquid. Check the sugar content.

Glad you are feeling better.

I'm taking children's Motrin kids liquid and crushing a Excedrin in it. That's what my doctor told me today for my Migraines. I just worried about my stomach to get messed up with that kind of medicine but he did tell me to do that. I'm just going on a week with a headache still. Then having to take this twice a day.

curlysue- could it be a caffeine headache? I had to stop caffeine before my surgery (6/13) and I had horrible headaches. I am now drinking Decaf coffee which has a minimal amount of caffeine in it.

I hope your headaches are better!!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
