Crunches? Really? Dumb question of the day

Recommended Posts

Stupid question for the experienced bandsters- but has anyone had issues with the port or slippage with crunches/sit ups?

I am NOT exercising yet aside from walking- going to wait until about 6 weeks out to start.

I can't help but wonder if it will feel strange/hurt/cause slippage when I do start.

Anyone?

I'm only ten days post-op here, and in the grand scheme of things this feels like a really stupid question, but has anyone had any difficulty with sit-ups/crunches post-op?

To me now, sitting up is painful, and while know that will get better I can't help thinking the strain will move your band around, or you'll pop a suture in your port on the abdominal wall and it'll come loose. REALLY foolish, I know! But really? It's ok?

I'd just like to hear from some experienced bandsters out there on whether it feels strange, whether you've experienced problems, etc...?

Pashmina - I don't think you are suppose to be doing crunchs or situps ten days out... Your stomach is still healing from surgery - they cut thru mucsle that has to heal.. STOP !!! You need to ck w/your doctor before you exercise - Mine told me i could do arms and treadmill unitl i go back on 9/5 and i was banded a month ago... Please ck w/your doctor - I don't want you to injure yourseld... There will be plenty of time for crunches once you have healed If you want to exercise go for a walk...

OK- I think my post must have been confusing. I am NOT working out at all right now! I am asking about when I DO start to work out- six or so weeks from now, has anyone had any trouble with crunches and the port?

Going to EDIT now.

like i said before, that depends on YOUR surgeon... you will hear 99 different things from 99 different surgeons...

good luck!

DITTO - You have to ask your doctor

Hi-

I only walked for 6 weeks. But, after that I've done crunches and other strenghtening exercises 3-5 times a week with no problems.

Good luck-I'm glad you hear your interested in exercising. I read a lot of post complaining of slow and stalled weight loss but often they admitt exercising hasn't been a priorty.

Thanks so much for your response Connie. You really answered my question. I'm getting stronger every day and looking forward to getting back to the weights in the gym a month from now.

Oh- and BIG Congrats on those 57 pounds!!!! Awesome.

I started out just walking for 1/2 hr. until Doc said I could do more. I used to HATE to exercise (my body was a visual aid to that fact) I started doing a Pilates/Yoga DVD as well as the 1/2 walk and I can't tell you HOW MUCH my body shape has changed. I've only lost about 20 lbs since surgery (5/30) BUT have gone down 2 sizes. When I started the DVD the crunches started causing some pain around 1 of my incisions. I talked to the physical therapist I knew (didn't want to tell Doc and maybe get yelled at) and he said I'd probably torn some adhesions (scar tissue built up from the incision) and to stop the DVD for 2 weeks. I have resumed and no problems now! Just be careful!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
