Anyone dreading being alone in hospital?

Recommended Posts

Surgery is next Thursday and I'm mentally prepping myself. I've already reminded my husband twice to bring our 2 boys to visit me as I will be there minimum 2 nights. I will especially miss my baby (2 yrs), my oldest (9) is pretty independent but ill miss him too. I am a pretty busy fulltime working mom so I really need to take those 2 days to rest before I get home.

Also, my last 2 overnight hospital experiences were when I had my boys. It felt great and I was full of joy. But This..... feels soooo different for me...almost like a "How did I get myself here" feeling. not so much happy but I know I should be.

Just wondering what everyone's feelings are right now prior to surgery.

I think is going to be a very different experience. A lot of recovery and work, walking those halls, getting fluids in when our new stomachs are not happy about it!

Just keep an open mind on seeing the boys. I had one friend whose husband saw her in a lot of discomfort after surgery and decided that the kids visiting was not a good idea, and kept them home. Some people have a rough recovery, some are still super loopy on drugs and painkillers. But...others glide right through it all without too much discomfort. Hopefully that will be you!

I'm sure missing your family will be tough, but you'll also have those two days to focus just on you and what you need to do to heal and gain strength. And they'll be over before you know it!

You may want to ask your husband to keep a firm grip on your toddler's hand in the hospital hallways. Not only can wandering children hurt themselves, they can hurt other people. I know it wasn't fun for me when a running three year old (my best guess) went crashing into my IV pole and pulled the IV needle and tubing right out of my arm as I was doing my laps around the nursing station :( -- but I think his parents felt worse than I did! It was nice to see all the parents on my floor -- specialized floor just for bariatric surgery patients -- getting visits from their children.

I was alone in the hospital for 3 days. And I welcomed it. I really didn't want my kids to see me like that. I was out of it first day and most of second. Last day was painful and having people there I felt bad because I would fall asleep on them

I'm going to miss my kiddos as well. I'm a full time mom with two daughters, eldest is 7 and youngest is 2. My husband is my biggest supporter and I know he will bring my baby angels so that puts my mind at ease. My surgery is this Wednesday so I understand where your coming from. Good luck and best wishes.

I know this may sound odd, but women have a hard time giving themselves permission. May I as kindly as I can... say please take this time to care for yourself. I know you will miss your boys and you may think you'll be miserable, but you won't be. I had to go into the hospital for three days and my son stayed with my husband. The reason being my older son was actually traumatized by seeing me in the hospital. He would get VERY anxious if I got sick. Take a photo of them with you, call them...facetime. Take this time to care for yourself.

I agree with everyone. Taking time for yourself is the most important thing. You will be home soon enough. If you don't use those 2 days to recover properly you won't be worth anythign when you do go home.

I had my surgery in the morning......and after waking up and walking the first time and getting back to the room I really was ready for my wife to head on home and take care of family things.

The time that afternoon went fast....night was fast.....and next full day there was fast. I enjoyed being on my own....which I really wasn't due to the nurses coming every few minutes it seemed to check vitals and such.

The time passed quickly and I was ready to for the trip home.

I hate being in hospitals and honestly don't want visitors.....I just want to focus on recovering from the procedures and get the heck outa there.

Everyone is different.

Between my three teenagers, my somewhat needy husband and dog that's under my feet all the time I was glad for a day in the hospital to just be alone and let the nurses take care of me. Don't get me wrong I love my family but this was truly the first thing I have done for me since I was 19 years old and had my first child so it was good to be taken care of for a change and not dealing with anyone else.

@@reachbree Please reconsider having your little ones come to the hospital. Speaking on behalf of a child, seeing Mom in a hospital bed hooked up to needles and beeping machines is scary as hell! Surgical floors are very different from OB floors. Others may be in pain (making it known) or have significant illnesses - and you don't want your children witness any of that. You will be exhausted - and won't be able to hold your 2 year old (and it would be hard not to). The children will be scared. I have been that child and at 48 years old still remember the feeling and the worry. I still remember walking through the hospital halls holding my Dad's hand. I also worked in hospitals for years and have seen the reaction of children - it's very scary.

Everyone's experience is different after surgery. Some people bounce back immediately some need a little extra time. I for one needed a little extra time and care due to the severe nausea and exhaustion. I was not in shape for my teens to visit me in the hospital. It was best for them to get updates and see me when I was in better shape and got home. A visit with them would have caused unnecessary worry and unwanted drama. This worked out because I could focus on me, my wellbeing and medical care. My surgery went excellent it was just reactions/after effects to anesthesia.

Definitely check with your hospital about their policy for visitors. When it comes to young children, they may not even allow it.

My daughter came to see me for a half hour each day. It was just enough. I am deathly afraid of being left alone in the hospital, so the first night my best friend stayed with me. Most hospitals allow it. Ask for a patient advocate if they give you any problems. I was extremely sensitive to the anesthesia and pain medicine. It took me 24hrs to stop feeling nauseas, spitting/heaving, and my headache to subside. Walk as much as possible! Walking helped me burp and feel better.

I'm thinking why would you want to risk exposing your children to germs at the hospital..

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
