A stall AND weight gain, 9 weeks out

I know this is an overly talked about topic but I'm 9 weeks out, this last week I lost 1.4 lbs and in the last 2 days, I gained 2 lbs. Like, really? I'm not doing anything different or crazy. I will say that along with the weight gain, I'm all of a sudden real hungry too. Help

Are you near to starting your period? Because that typically causes hormone fluctuations and cravings along with bloat and weight gain.

You'll see this happen lots and sometimes it won't be because of your cycle - just random gains of 1-3 pounds due to hormone craziness (fat stores hormones, so as you lose fat, all those hormones get flooded back into your system and can cause weight gain and super fun crazy mood swings too!), Water retention due to eating certain foods or too much salt, the weather, what color your best friend's hairdresser's cousin wore on Monday... :D

In other words, it happens and sometimes there is no real reason or explanation. You just roll with it.

But the good news is small weight fluctuations are usually resolved within a few days and you'll see a drop in weight again soon.

Just stick to your Protein and Water goals, log all of your food so you know you're on track as far as calories go, and keep the carbs from creeping up too high, and you'll be fine.

I agree it could be hormonal... i was due a week go... i am late... and i gained 1 pound this week.... so it quite possibly could be it...

I just wish my cycle would go back to normal already!! I've been feeling bloated and PMS for almost 2 weeks now!

Thank you guys. My periods have been very out of whack so it's possible I could be pms, plus I have been coockoo. I just don't want this to keep happening. I am right around the weight that I usually get to before I get to a plateau and never get smaller than this. I'm scared this is happening. I felt like the surgery would help me get past this weight and I'm sure it will, it's just a little nerve racking.

Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs. of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when a patient is not getting in enough food, the body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. Then when 2 lbs. of glycogen is used a patient will also lose 8 lbs. of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs. that most people lose in the first week of a diet.


However, when the body stays in a caloric deficit state the body starts to realize that this is not a short-term problem. Then the body starts mobilizing fat from adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But the body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. As it puts back the 2 lbs. of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs. of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though the patient might still be losing energy content to their body, the weight will not go down or it might even gain for a while as the retention of water dissolves the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

None of us lose weight at a constant or steady rate. Stalls, slow downs, and Water weight fluctuations are common. If you intend to lose a substantial amount of weight, you will experience stalls.

Just follow your program.

Focus on getting in all of your Protein and fluids.

Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed.

Exercise when cleared.

Stay off the scale.

Around the start of my period, I tend to gain about 1-1.5 pounds in Water weight that goes away a few days after it starts. Generally, I have been maintaining between 148-150 for the past month and a half or so and my goal was 150. I just keep following the dietary guidelines my surgeon and nutritionist have given me, and things have worked out well :). If you stick to the diet and activity guidelines you've been given, I am pretty sure you will be fine!

Like others have said, stalls happen...so don't worry! I was told by my surgeon that even if you stall, you will still lose inches because your body is just catching up with the weight loss, so sometimes keeping track of your measurements can really help out!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
