Has anyone felt depressed aftwr surgery? I touched on this in another thread but would like to hear others with this issue and how you dealt. I haven't laughed since surgery on 5/24 the liquid diet is hard for me but I don't think that's my only problem...I'm just down and can't get out of my funk. My wife is pregnant and due soon I'm sure that's part of it feeling weak and useless with a baby on the way.....thoughts?

yes, I had depression, mild, for about a month following surgery - weeks 4-8 and now off and on. I'm fine one day, down the next, and unreasonably in a good mood occasionally.

it's the hormones that were stored in the fat. normal. in fact, I have two people I love and trust who I am filtering all important decisions through right now, because I know my emotions are not reliable or stable, or necessarily reflective of fact.

I think this part has to be more difficult for the guys, at least as a woman I'm used to riding a hormone rollercoaster.

Walking helps me. exercise is shown to elevate the mood. it at least keeps me from wallowing in it, and then I only seem more subdued to those who know me.

and congrats on the baby! getting into good shape will sure allow you to chase after the youngin a lot more easily.

Yes I was super depressed after my surgery to the point that my parents had me on a suicide watch. But I also was dealing with my crumbling marriage

It's not surprising that a lot of folks suffer from depression after wls. Many of us have used food as a coping mechanism for years and after surgery that primary way of coping is gone. Feeling depressed may be a result of not being able to use food to regulate your emotions. It might be good to seek help from a counselor or support group.

I believe that Magnesium (Oratate, Gluatamte..basically anything but Magnesium Oxide or Magnesium Citrate) is the magic supplement. Stress burns out our stores, surgery is stressful, it adds to depression, increases anxiety. The book, Magnesium Miracle is a good source of information or even Amazon reviews on magnesium. To me and some of my friends, Magnesium is the bomb. I regularly take 200% of daily value (gotta fill up the empty bucket), in fact I bought some tonight as I ran out..and guess what? Been depressed and low energy. We are all IMHO low on it. If you take too much, you only poop it out. I think we ALL should be taking it!

You are only weeks from surgery and in a major life change, this will soon pass and you will be in rocking shape when that baby gets here.

Just keep your eye on the prize.... Think about how lucky your baby is going to be to have the new and improved you for a dad... Your going to be a great role model for healthy eating and will be able to an active part of the baby's life... What a blessed life you have to get two exciting life changes at once...

I didn't speak to anyone more than a few words at a time for nearly a week after surgery!

Hope you get feeling better. I know I didn't believe a single person who kept telling me that it would pass and it gets better. I seriously kept thinking wtf did I do to myself? But seriously, it does get better. Around 2 weeks I felt pretty decent.

I'am just about 6months post op and my mental health as slowly been on the decline. My anxiety is really bad with borderline panic attacks daily. I'am not sure if the surgery triggered this but i never had an issue prior.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
