Does anyone have any suggestions on a post-opp workout?? I am 2 weeks till surgery and am thinking about staying ahead of the weight loss and sagging skin. Am I even being realistic???

Until I was cleared to get in the pool, I just walked some.

Once my incisions healed, and I was able to swim, I started swimming (Water aerobics, laps, etc.).

I did everything I could to get in the best shape I could going into surgery. For a month after it was an hour or more of walking per day. Your stomach staple line is healing, you put a great deal of stress on your core when you lift anything to heavy.

The next month added the elliptical trainer and slowly added interval training. Light weights.

The next month increased weights at a rate of 10% per week until I hit my max.

Then I started C25K and hot yoga on month three.

Slow ramp up, exciting results.

I was only allowed to walk the first month - and in the beginning I was walking s l o w l y - and by the end of the month I was at my pre-surgery speed and much more stamina and distance. I was walking so much at 1 month the dog ran away from me a few times in the morning rather than go for a walk, ha.

at one month I was cleared to do what I wanted, and build up slowly, so I added back in my favorite yoga routines, and I was doing 1 time a week pilates, but have now upped that to 3 times a week. I swim whenever I get the chance. *swimming* is my favorite thing. I have been back to hiking a few times. hope to maybe go hiking this coming weekend.

Working out is awesome check your doc for their specific requirements and recommendations. I started couch to 5k after a few weeks and now 2.5 years later I'm running my second full marathon this weekend.

That said, exercise and working out will do NOTHING for saggy skin except maybe fill it out a bit. It's about genetics, age, number of years you were overweight, how much yo yo dieting you did, etc.

After 136lb loss regardless of my running and killer yoga muscles, at age 45 having been overweight much of my life and obese for 18 years only surgery got rid of my excess skin.

I have to chime in and say I love love love Pilates. I started about four months after surgery, when I hit 250, at a Pilates studio offering group Reformer classes close to my house. Initially I was doing 2 classes a week, but now I do 4-5 a week. I LOVE the stuff. It doesn't make me sweaty, it's easy to modify for my joints, and it's doing a great job of building a flexible muscular structure under my fat/skin. *grin* I also really like that it has a focus on being aware of your body and how it moves through space. Losing 100+ pounds is a lot of change on one's center of gravity -- but Pilates has me covered in working on balance and control. It's also specfically strengthening parts of my body -- my lower back, ankles, hip muscles and abdominal core -- that were weak and/or really affected by carrying so much weight.

Benefits: I am starting to wear *heels* again! I have so much ankle strength I can do that! My posture is better. It's helping my um, bosom sit up higher even as I lose weight, because of building my pectoral muscles. It has a focus on getting blood pumping, which I think may help skin tightening. It makes me feel strong and good about my body!

I pay $169 a month for unlimited classes, and I absolutely think it's worth it to me. My nutritionist said that between that and walking, she's comfortable that I'm getting enough exercise and I don't need to add additional cardio. On the other hand, if I want it, they also have Cardio-Pilates at my studio.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
