Pre- op diet: shakes are so horrible

Recommended Posts

Thanks - I will try some variations - I have lost 10 lbs in 4 days --- which I'm not excited about actually . Just hungry and miserable

How much more do you have on this diet?

I know it's hard, I am on week 4 of liquid diet now (2 pre op) and now 2nd post op it's definitely easier post op, but hang in there, it will benefit you during your surgery.

Did you say youre on 4 week liquid diet? Why 4 weeks

The folks in my local support group suggest freezing the Premier shakes. They say they are more like a milkshake that way. Trying it tonight, fingers crossed! They are awful otherwise.

It's probably 2 weeks pre-surgery, 2 weeks post-surgery. That's what my doctor has me on, too. I think I miss food more now, at the end of the 2 weeks pre-surgery, than I did at the beginning of the full liquids. Oh well... I'll survive; in 48 hours I'll be on the way to the hospital for surgery!

I am adding a little more milk and blending a little ice and strawberries .... So great, I can drink them all - but after surgery I won't be able to increase liquid or add fruit .... Just worried . I really didn't think I would have any trouble ( I can eat / drink anything which may be why I am readying myself for surgery)

I guess I should have paid attention to NUT and tried different shakes before I need them

Ok, that is all ( hee hee)

Just keep trying different brands, there are so so so many and we all have different tastes. I can't stand the ones most people love. For me it's all about syntax matrix and Quest. There are a couple other random non mainstream brands I like but those are my big two.

Nashua Nutrition (Google for their website) will sell you a sample of any brand/flavor they carry for $1. Try a ton of brands and flavors till you find one you like.

I also like fit frappe chai and the chike brand coffee ones if you can have caffeine. I also mix a scoop of vanilla matrix with Starbucks via for an "iced latte"

GNC sells samples. My favorite is Quest vanilla . I add extract flavors to make any variety of flavors.

However, I would not stock up on too many pre-op. Many WLS folk's tastes change after surgery. What you can't stand the taste of pre-op, may very well be your favorite post-op.

Make it is joyful experiment--going shake shopping. :)

Good luck!

I am on my two week pre- op liquid diet and I am struggling to choke down the vanilla shakes ...any advice? I have switched from Water to milk and it is slightly more tolerable

Have you tried EAS AdvantEdge RTD? They are not as thick as some others.

strawberry reminds me of strawberry Quik

chocolate Fudge is like YooHoo

Cafe Caramel tastes like iced coffee.

Just keep trying different shakes till you find what you like, everyone's tastes are different.

What about Dannon Light & Fit Greek yogurt? Yogurt counted as a liquid on my program, or even Protein puddings.

I found that I like the shakes made from powders better than the ready-made, preserved shakes. I make my shakes with unsweetened almond milk, or unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I really like the Syntrax Nectars. I also make a yogurt shake, with one of the almond milks and a container of Dannon lite and fit greek yogurt, but I add enough unflavored Syntrax Protein to equal the amount of protein that I'd get from a regular shake. I suppose you could make these with skim milk instead, but I cannot stand the taste of skim milk and don't like to use it in anything!

Where can I find these? I had someone in my support group say the same thing, but I have been unable to find these in shake form (I can only find the Protein powder.)

I get them in Walmart, which has the best price here, or Shoprite.

I can get the EAS AdvantEdge carb control RTD by the case at Sam's and BJ's too.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
