Anyone morbidly obese and considering the gastric sleeve?

Recommended Posts

@@Kwilliams03,

I think most (or at least a lot of) people who have the sleeve were morbidly obese. The standard guidelines are to be morbidly obese, which is a BMI of 40 or over, or to have a BMI of 35 plus a comorbidity. Good luck with your decision! Let us know how it goes.

I had a BMI of 50, and had the sleeve last October. Down 103 pounds since last July and loving it.

Had my sleeve a few days before Halloween and am now down (including pre-op) 131 lbs. Started at 401.5 now 270. BMI has gone down 22 points. I also am one of the people with PCOS and hypothyroidism and weight has always been a struggle. I worried that the sleeve wouldn't work for me, but it has been working like a charm... albeit very slowly at times. I used to have terrible back pain which is almost gone, reflux issues... gone, GI issues... lessened drastically, and more energy to do things I couldn't do before, like walk up the stairs at work or the hated hills in SF. VSG was seriously the best decision I've made.

I guess I need to clarify my topic. I was asking because some doctors actually require a person to get the gastric bypass procedure done instead of the sleeve if your a certain weight. So I was asking with that in mind. I'm well aware of the requirements to have the sleeve done because I'm in the process of trying to figure out what will work best for me. :)

My understanding is that the sleeve started the other way around. Some extremely high BMI folks were given the sleeve as the first part of a two-step procedure so they could lose enough to safely undergo the second part. So many people did so well that they didn't need the second part that they started offering it as a standalone procedure.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
