Did anyone not experience hair loss?

Recommended Posts

I am approaching 2 months post surgery and have started reading about the Hair loss stage. Has anyone out there been lucky enough not to lose your hair. I've been taking Biotin since before my surgery and reducing the amount of heat I apply to my hair, but I'm worried that no matter what I do there is no real way to prevent the hair loss.

reducing heat or styling products will only help prevent breaking hair, not it falling out.

I am almost 3 months, so far no unusual Hair loss - but we'll see. I eat an egg most days, and they are a good source of Protein and Biotin. I always make my Protein goals, and loosing on the slow side, so hopefully haven't freaked my body out too much. time will tell. I think if it is going to happen it will.

There's never been anything proven that prevents post WLS hairloss. It's either gonna happen or not, it's just how some people's bodies react to the stress of surgery and drastic diet change. As for Biotin, it may help with regrowth, but won't stop loss from happening. Some studies suggest adequate Protein can help minimize loss, but again, nothing proven for sure.

As for me, I never lost a strand of hair. In fact, it's thicker and longer now than it's ever been. I also never took Biotin or used any special hair products. I was meeting or exceeding Protein and Fluid goals by day 5 and I really never stressed over surgery, the pre and postoperative diets, stalls, two months of diarrhea, hairloss, etc. I actually planned to shave my head and wear cool hats but never had to. Mental stress can be just as destructive as physical stress, so maybe all that protein and positive attitude contributed to my keeping all my hair. But maybe it had nothing to do with it.

Good luck and just enjoy the journey, whatever it brings.

Some people don't experience Hair loss, but IMO, that's luck, not some magical formula of Biotin and Protein and special shampoos and whatnot. I think if there were a way to prevent hair loss after surgery, no one would lose hair because everyone would do it.

My surgeon told me to save my money on biotin, that it won't prevent hair loss. I wish I had listened! I took large doses for months before and then after surgery. I met my protein goal every single day starting the first 24 hours after surgery (and I ate high protein beforehand too). I took zinc even though it made me sick. I still lost tons of hair (on my head that is -- I did get the well-known biotin side effect of growing lush crops of hair on my face and everywhere below the navel).

Too early to tell whether I will get any loss. I have been taking Biotin, I don't notice extra hair anywhere but on my head, it's definitely thicker, but not in the front where I'd most like it. I wasn't able to meet Protein goals until after the first two weeks, but nothing I can do about that now.

6 months out no Hair loss. I'm low BMI and have only lost 45 pounds in that time so maybe it's losing so slowly that has an upside. Who knew?

I did not have hair loss either. My nails got dry and flakey, but that resolved around the fifth month out.

I'm 7 months out and no Hair loss for me luckily. I use the Bariatric Advantage multi Vitamin and it has Biotin in it. I do notice that my hair is growing faster which is bad for my bank account because I have to get it colored more often.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
