Protein shakes and food source protein

Recommended Posts

Currently I find it really difficult to drink my Protein Shakes. So I was really wondering if down the line I can manage to get in my recommended daily intake of Protein (which for me is around 60g) will I still have to drink my Protein shake? I mean is protein not absorbed properly with bypass patients the same was many Vitamins and minerals are hence the need to supplement with Multi Vitamins? ?!

I'm thinking 1 chicken breast + 1 serving of cottage cheese + 1 serving of oats per day can meet my Recommended daily intake of protein

Also when I reach my goal weight and my weight stabilizes will I still need to take in this much of protein per day?

I think you have to keep up the Protein forever, but you know there are Isopure RTD beverages you can buy. They have assorted flavors, 20oz. bottles 40gms of Protein in each bottle. I buy mine from Lucky Vitamin, they have the best prices. My favorite is blue raspberry. They are really good & there is no after taste.

I just googled the product.. It comes in a clear class bottle right?? So far looks good. Is this something I can start with now? I'm really struggling with Protein shakes. And Multivitamins to be honest. I'm using the Bariatric Choice all-in-one multi-Vitamins, and also bought the chewy bites version of it. Both taste horrible.

Yes that's right clear bottles. I started mine a couple of weeks after surgery. As far as the Vitamins go I use Bariatric Support chewable Multi, by TwinLab, there is 60 tablets in the bottle. I get them from The Vitamin Shoppe. They don't taste bad at all, although they're the size of a hermit crab! Thank God they're chewable! Lol Vitamins are berry Flavor.

I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. Your daily Protein requirement is met by a combination of the Protein you obtain from supplements (protein shakes, protein bars) combined with the protein from meals. But after surgery, the volume of food is so small that you have to rely on supplements. If you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you can began to reduce your requirements on protein supplements as your meal volume increases. Over the first 1 1/2 years, I went from 3 Protein Shakes per day, down to 2, down to 1 and then down to none (once I reached 1 cup per meal).

I relied on softer foods (chili and soups). I made my own and fortified them with around twice the protein found in canned Soups and chilis. At the end of the following article, I have included a few recipes. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

Ahhh that's great to know .. But I still need to know, does your daily protein requirement reduces as you come down in weight? I know for sure someone weighing 70kg needs much less protein that someone weighing 120kg!

@@mmy -- No, your Protein requirement does not come down. THe only difference is that eventually, you will not need to have Protein shakes as a Meal Replacement anymore--you will get all your protein from food (and Isopure if you like but that isn't a Meal Replacement as far as I know). I will warn you that Isopure is an acquired taste. It's talked about a lot on this site. When I first tried it I hated it and spit it out. But for some reason a few weeks later I went back and now I love them but understand that not everybody will.

But, protein is your main thing you need to watch and count forever (at least for RNY--I can't speak for sleeves or bands because I just don't know). And you should try to get over "counting calories". We count grams of protein rather than calories. It's actually easier and less overwhelming.

No I'm not counting calories at all. I had a mini gastric bypass which was even more modified to suite me since my BMI is only 33. I think I won't be able to order isopure since no shipping company seems to be willing to ship food items especially in glass bottles. They only option I'm left with now is the GNC brand isolate & hydrolyzed protein. Which tastes horrible. I wish there were protein daily injectables or maybe pills to just swallow

The company Lucky Vitamin will ship it, that's how I get mine with no problems. You can also get it at Amazon but their prices are higher.

you should eventually be able to eat enough to get all 60 grams from your food. I have to have 100 grams a day, else my blood Protein levels tank, so I don't think I'll ever be able to get off of Protein shakes. Fortunately, I don't really mind them.

@@esskay77 - here's what I typically have:

breakfast: Greek yogurt with a few berries on top

lunch: 1 C cottage cheese or another thing of Greek yogurt (yesterday I had a few fresh veggies with my cottage cheese)

dinner - usually a cup of some kind of stir-fry (meat & veggies, no rice), but last night I had 2.5 oz steak with a small salad

I always make a "double" Protein shake (as in two scoops) and sip on it throughout the day. I also drink *a ton* of fluids - mostly Water & Crystal Light

I try not to snack, but I keep the following around at home and at work "just in case": small cans of Tomato juice, instant miso Soup, Dannon Light & Fit yogurt (only 80 calories), sugar free fudgesicles, sugar free popsicles

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
