I'm 5 weeks out. I decided to try some liquor. I wanted to see if it really is 5x more potent etc as I was told. It's not! Honestly nothing. If nothing else I have a higher resistance. . I've had 2 oz of gin, tequila, and bourbon at different times, nothing. Anyone else experience this? And I'm not mixing it with a lot of liquid. I even sipped the bourbon straight over the course of about 30 mins - nada.

5 weeks?!?! That seems super early for alcohol. I wasn't even on solid foods at 5 weeks. I wasn't cleared for alcohol until 3 months post-op.

I personally have found that I get drunk very quickly, but I also sober up really quickly. So one drink will have me feeling buzzed, but for only about 15-20 minutes tops.

I was not allowed alcohol for 6 months. Just the thought of straight liquor on a pretty much newly sleeved stomach is not a good idea, in my opinion. See what your doc says if you tell him/her. Why would you want to take a chance on damaging your newly sleeved stomach, please try to be more adherent to the program. Ulcers and Gerd can happen, and that would be pretty uncomfortable. I am really not trying to judge or preach, may seem that way, but straight alcohol can't be good.

One point ... if you are one of those for whom alcohol does not give you much of a buzz anymore you are probably in more danger. You *might* have a tendency to drink more than you once did to find that buzz. The extra drinks would put your liver under strain at a time when it's working hard to detox your body.

No judgment. Just info.

Thanks for the comments. Don't need the judgements lol. Yes I know I'm supposed to wait bla bla bla. I am curious. Maybe after 6 months it'll be different.

I am 6 weeks out and am enjoying a little wine 2 or 3 times a week.....counting calories of course. I didn't experience any "BUZZ" at all. I just know we need to be aware of the empty calories.

I've noticed the same… I am a wine drinker and have been drinking it occasionally since around the 5 month mark. At first, it barely affected me, but I was being super careful. After I relaxed enough to enjoy it, I noticed it would hit me fast (nothing I could not control), but the buzz would fade fast, too. So, like VSGAnn2014 said, I now know I need to be careful. One night, in a social setting, I drank too much wine, but just to keep my buzz (helped with the social situation)… I never got 'drunk'… not good for my liver, I know, so I am trying to be super careful now. This is just another one of those areas, post surgery, where I am learning anew… I don't plan to stop drinking wine occasionally, but my post surgery health comes first and I am trying to find the right balance… Just being honest :)

I understand...this is my struggle...big challenge. I am a "heavy" wine drinker!! The problem is....I can live on wine, crackers and cheese...and I don't exercise or even take short walks! I drive to work and have little activity for 8 hours. I've gained 20-25 pounds in the last year. Now, I am desperate trying to get back on track and regain control. This the one "bad behavior" I have not being able to get rid of. It was easy for me to start drinking 4 months after surgery (4 yrs ago).

Oh, Miriam! You're sliding down a very slippery slide.

Do you know what kinds of leading questions my shrink would ask you?

"How well do you think you're caring for yourself?"

"Where do you think that continuing your current regimen will lead you to in 3, 6, 12 months from now?"

"If you were caring well for yourself, what would that look like?"

"Which of those changes would be difficult?"

"Which of those changes would be easy?"

"HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT?"

;) Sorry, I had to put that last one in there.

I was told 1 year before having alcohol. I waited about 3 months and it didn't do anything to me! But then.... It hit me about 5 months post op... It almost makes me sick (not sure if I'm happy about this part). I have drank a small margarita (skinny) and felt plastered. I'm still debating on whether it's worth it at all. It sure would save me $$$!

I'm seven months out and I can say that it does hit me harder.

I don't usually have a meal in my system if I'm drinking anything. I know this is part of it.

I don't drink as long as I used two, either. I've learned that nursing a drink or two is all I ever care for.

Had my first drink on May 13th, being sleeved on March 28th so figure 7 weeks post op. Was a heavy drinker pre-op and I wanted to test it out - so I went to the bar, where my friend works (free drinks - yikes). Ended up having 4 glasses of wine and 2 shots of rumchata. The first drink I drank very slow, I felt it hit hard, and then leveled out. But as number 2, 3 and 4 went down quicker, I could def feel the buzz. After that, the shots put me over the edge and I was drunk. Ended up having a hangover and needed Tylenol and Water the next day. Pre-op - 6 drinks would of made me buzzed, if that - not even close to being drunk. I do agree that it hits you faster, and harder in less amounts. But you also need to consider how fast you drink, if you are drinking on an empty stomach, and the type of alcohol, wine vs. hard liquor. Just be mindful of these things, and you will be fine. Oh and of course, the super mega added calories. When I drink on a weekend, I expect a few days of a setback in weight loss. Sometimes it is worth it in my opinion, other times, not so much. But for a celebration like memorial day weekend coming up, I will give myself a few glasses of wine. Cheers everyone!

I have honestly been afraid to try wine. I am about six weeks post-op and although I wasn't a heavy drinker, I did enjoy a couple of glasses a week. I don't miss it like I thought I would. I am sure I will try it eventually, but right now I am not ready.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
