Pre-op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

My doc doesnt do any preop diet except the day before surgery. They used to up to a year ago. They found patients were having surgery and starting out malnourished. Since they quit the pre op diet the nutritionist said patients do much better. We will see. Surgery probably last of june or july.

My doctor just said lose 25 pounds or he won't do the surgery he gave me no liquid diet. Just the warning that most people do not lose what he asks and they do not get the surgery until they do. I surprised him and the staff I lost 40 pounds on my own and was not hungry at all. He said I was the first to ever do that. Here it takes 6 months to get approved you have all kinds of test and seminars but he don't put you on a diet until everything else is done. The minute I came in with my weight loss he scheduled my surgery. And because I lost more then the 25 pounds I got to eat all my favorite things before my surgery. You can do it!

Wow, not that it's okay, but I ate "fairly normal", without binging, the weeks prior to surgery. I'm classified as morbidly obese, 274 @ 5'5". The dietician who did the seminar at the preop appointment for about 20 of us, told us to eat a NORMAL dinner the night before even. I'm kind of glad I didn't have to do a pre-op diet, and there were no complications but those of you who do it will prolly find it easier to do the post-op diet. (Although now I have no problems with that either and I dropped 21 pounds by my week check up.) I know that's not gonna stay like that, and I will be happy with 2 lbs a week or whatever, as long as it's going down so I can get off meds.

I am scheduled for sleeve surgery on the 31st and am now trying to diet strictly before my two week diet starts on the 17th. I am struggling so much now, that I am considering cancelling the surgery!

My name is Marissela and I'm also doing my sleeve on the 31St. Don't cancel just hang in there and try your best to stick to the liquid diet. Best of luck...

I am post op 8 days. I had a FIVE WEEK pre op diet. It sucked. I got bouts of low blood sugar, almost fainting at work and feeling shit. I didnt cheat once and my liver was still large. Im lucky my surgeon went ahead. Please dont put yourself in more danger by ignoring their requirements

The liver is not on top of the stomach, they are on opposite sides of the body, but if it is a fatty liver, it can be rather large and get in the way of surgery. My surgeon said if it is too large and in the way, it can be too risky to proceed with surgery. The liver can tear easily.

My Dr told me to stay on a low carb diet for two weeks before the surgery and the day before the surgery have a liquid only diet. It must be hard to do a full two weeks of a liquid diet! Hang in there, your Dr must want it for a reason. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
