May 16th surgery buddies?.....Let's do this together!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I hope you don't mine if I join in. My surgery is also the 16th, here in Perth, Western Australia. I started my pre-op diet yesterday which consists of 3 shakes/soups a day with 2 cups of vegetables. I'm using Optifast but quite honestly it's ghastly and I find it very hard to drink it. It's sickly sweet which is my main problem with it. I've also tried the Soup twice, I don't know what's in it but it has me sprinting for the loo like some demented greyhound after about 15 minutes. The thought of another 12 days of this is just depressing. I'm 67 and some days I think I must be mad to put myself through this but on my more sensible days I just would like to be rid of this excess weight. I've also got type 2 diabetes and I'm hopeful that I can reduce my medication. Thank you to whoever recommended the app, I've downloaded and look forward to tracking like mad. Cath

My pre-op diet is only a week, but it's all liquids and something like 800 calories, which is about 4 shakes a day. I hope to be receiving more detailed instructions sometime this week!

oh crap! I just had my pre-op appointment with the surgeon this morning and found out even though the insurance company told me my authorization was approved it's not....it is still under review!!! What was approved was the hernia repair (it auto approves).....The sleeve procedure is still under review!.....I meet all the requirements so it should be approved without any issues but it still makes me nervous waiting!!! ekkkkkk....The doc gave me all my scripts today and included one special request I had for Valium.....The insurance company better hurry up and do their thing otherwise all my Valiums will be gone...hahaha

I didn't meet insurance requirements so I'm self-pay. :( The good news is that my surgery just got moved from the 16th to the 9th (NEXT Monday)!!! I'm super excited and nervous.

I'll be a week ahead of most everyone on this thread, I guess. I'm happy to check in a few days post-op to let everyone know how it went.

I could use a buddy but my surgery is not until 19th... Curiosity question how long are you taking off work? I work from home so I think 3 weeks is a little excessive.

@@adrinanna, I haven't been told exactly how long to take off yet but I had to give my employer some idea this week, so I said 2 weeks. I think that's probably plenty for a desk job. If the doctor tells me different, I'll just let them know.

@@evette305, I'm so jealous! Lucky girl. I've got 2 full weeks of liquid diet.

@@kmorri, I am so sorry!! When will you know you're approved? I think that there is a time requirement that the insurance company must come back with an answer, one way or the other. For me, it was 15 business days from the time the surgeon submitted my paperwork. Hang in there, girl!

@@Maggie Journey I'm expecting something in the next couple of days.....no one seems to be worried about it except me....like I said all the requirements are met. It's just being told yesterday that it was approved and then today finding out that was just for the hernia repair ......it just makes me nervous for it to be up in the air.......Thanks for you concern.....hopefully tomorrow!!

I'm reporting back with my Day #2 report of this 100% liquid fast. 2 days down and 12 to go.

Oddly, I haven't felt hunger pains at all. But, I've been feeling really tired and lacking energy. I'm nailing my Protein requirement, but the calories are really low. Only 657 cals yesterday, 684 cals today. They didn't give me a calorie goal, though.

How are the other liquid fasters doing so far?

My pre-op diet has been going great! But it's not all liquid. It basically how I've dieted for many years. Just no bread or starches.....with the exception of replacing one meal with a Protein shake. I'm certainly loosing weight! I've already lost a total of 13.4 pounds, but I started by doing all liquids on Saturday and Sunday and changed over to my prescribed diet on Monday.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
