I used most of the things I brought. Pillow, pajama pants, toothbrush/paste, deodorant, brush and head band. Chapstick is probably the thing I used the most. I had a book with me, as well as an iPad and charger, but couldn't really focus enough to read. I also had my phone and charger, which I used quite a bit. Instead of a book, I should have brought a couple of magazines.

I just stayed over night.

I took (and used):

An extra pair of undies to wear home. I just wore home the clothes I wore to the hospital.

Lip balm

My cpap.

My phone and charger.

Heating pad. (I actually forgot mine so my sister got me one at a nearby drug store. It helped with the gas pain in my shoulder, plus I was freezing.)

The hospital supplied toiletries, no slip socks, etc.

The best thing I took was my mom. She went with me and stayed the whole time.

I must say my mom came in the most handy.

Ear plugs and a night mask-to help you sleep-hospitals are noisy places! Bathrobe so you are more comfortable when walking the halls. Lip balm too. Good luck!

I'm may 2nd too. Good luck. Sending prayers. I agree with the previous comments. Pack light is what my surgeon told me.

The main things I used where hand lotion, a wash cloth, cleansing cloths (like baby or face wipes) and a bath robe. A lot of people take pillows. Lip balm or chap stick is a must, although they will probably give you Vaseline. I didn't use it because I had quite a bit of pain and I was salty. Tampons also if applicable and a change of panties. Air freshener isn't a bad idea. They gave me ice packs and I probably could have used a heating pad. A little fan might be a good idea. My room had a fan though. At my hospital almost everyone goes home on Day 2. I had some minor complications or side effects, and my surgery was first thing in the am, and I was discharged in the evening the next day.

I originally told my mom just to drop me off, my last few surgeries were easy and I don't usually involve her much in my medical care unless I need transportation, but the pain and discomfort was so much I was glad she was with me. I had an adverse reaction to one of the meds. The nurse didn't realized it until the next day. They let my mom stay with me longer because I couldn't stay still and my clothes kept coming off me. Eek. I was never in any real danger and everything went fine, but it was one of the more challenging experiences in my life to endure. I got pretty scared afterwards and let her go back home once I was pretty sure I would be ok. It helps to have a family member near by when you are recovering if possible.

I must say although I had a quite bit of pain in my stomach area upon waking, I really had very little pain after discharge.

The two things I took that really helped not only at the hospital, but during the first week, was Gas x gas strips (not every hospital lets you use them) and a front closure bra with no underwire.

I wore the same outfit coming and going, Chapstick, biotene mouth spray, toothbrush and paste , deodorant and clean underwear. I never touched my phone or IPad ...I could have cared less! The best thing I had was my husband [emoji7]

Looks like you have a pretty good list here! Definitely don’t forget the phone and charger. If you like books, music, crosswords, or anything else to entertain you, pack a few of those. You might also want an extra sweater if you think you might get cold.

I took some noise canceling earbuds and a phone loaded with music. Made all the hospital noise disappear and I could actually sleep! The nurses actually had to grab my toe to wake me up when needed...

Defiantly needed Chapstick my lips were SO dry my mom brought in my iPad which helped pass the time oh and the charger is important and I had a extra pair of undies

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
