Anti-inflammatories off limits

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else had their physician state you should never take NSAIDS after your surgery? I know they can be hard on your stomach but I am curious why I will never be able to take them again. Also I take prednisone occasionally for asthma. Will this fall into the same category?

NSAIDS are off limits for us because they can cause ulcers, most commonly where the pouch meets the intestinal limb. These can be really dangerous, especially if they perforate the stomach or intestinal wall.

Prednisone would normally fall under this category as well, but your doctor/surgeon may decide the benefit is worth the risk and allow you to take them for a short period, most likely with a ppi or other stomach protectant like carafate. I would speak very thoroughly with your doctor and surgical team to see if there are any alternative medications you can try, or how to best protect yourself when you do need to take these meds.

Yes I say take head, I am 31 weeks post surgery and am having some arthritis pain so for a few weeks have been taking advil(not continually and not everyday) anyway the last couple of days I have had stomach and intestinal pain, NOT GOOD. I will not be taking again unless it is just one pill maybe once a month!

@kimsport. ask you Dr about an inhaled corticosteroid (Symbicort). I have found that this controls my asthma well and have not needed prednisone in years. I would bet your asthma symptoms will improve after weight loss.

Yes, i have been told this. I have post op back surgery and nsaids helped prevent most flair ups I'm worried about this which is why i have started to research medical marijuana, i'm not looking for a buzz not interested in that at all just looking for pain control alternatives. My surgery is coming up but i will start a separate post for that.

Obviously check with your surgeon about Prednisone; however, Prednisone is a steroid and NSAID stands for NONSTEROIDAL Anti-Inflammatory Drug, so it's not a NSAID, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's safe for you. You should review all medications with your doctor(s).

According to my surgeon steroids were off limits right after surgery because steroids dissolve the sutures.

I am pre op but currently taking a medication called Duexis for lingering pain I have from breaking my tailbone a few months ago. It is an NSAID combined with famotadine so it is intended for extended use and the Famotadine is supposed to help reduce the risk of ulcers. I haven't discussed continuing to use it with my surgeon, it's on my list of pre-op question for Monday but it may be something you could look into.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
