local tragedy has the single women in a panic

Recommended Posts

A 40 year old single mom was murdered and chopped up buy a guy she met online. They chatted for a month or more before meeting... and they had been on several dates/3 weeks into it before the incident happened. they went to the Marinars home opener game - so at least the date started out in public. According to everything I have read - she behaved in a reasonably prudent way in terms of length of time, going to public places etc.

I am on a couple of local ladies Facebook groups and there is a general freak out going on "I am never going to date again" type sentiments.

Of course what i know factually is you are much more likely to be murdered by someone you know - which is a disgusting fact in and of itself - but, it still casts a bit of a worrisome doubt.

As it applies to me, I very much trust the man I am seeing, I have met his friends, I know where he works etc. so I have no feeling that I should be afraid. However, that creeping anxiety remains.

Sometimes people in this world really suck.

That makes me want to do a background check on all men I date.

I saw that too. Being from Seattle myself, it freaked me out. Knowing that I was in dating mode not that long ago, freaked me out even more. Really getting harder and harder to trust people. Thankfully, they did catch the guy she went on a date with. Hoping if he is guilty he's prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Prayers for her 3 kids.

Yes, actually you should. If I am serious about someone after the coffee date, I'll check to make sure their divorce is final and if they have any criminal charges (mostly concerned about drugs or financial fraud). This internet thing helps, but in this case, probably wouldn't have set off any red flags. I think he had one minor conviction in MO.

Late Addition: Not that this would have helped this poor woman and her kids, but get a Google Phone number so you don't have to give out your cell phone number until you really get to know someone. And Kik messaging App is also a nice way to text, while protecting your privacy.

That is so sad, especially because she leaves 3 kids behind.

I have a weird outlook because I am not afraid of pain or death. I am afraid of a lot of things but not that. So I am more worried about my heart being broken than about being murdered. But I AM cautious when I first start dating someone. I guess the scariest part about this case to me is that it happened after a few dates, right around the time when I start feeling comfortable/relaxing around someone. So I probably would have allowed us to be alone too!

@@Katrinakit my views are similiar. I don't want to die, but I don't sit around worrying about it either. The other day a very scary horse incident occured that my sons heard but didn't see. I came in the house and my oldest said "mom, did someone just get stomped to death?" I told him what happened (close call, but no one was hurt) and we were heading out and he said... "Mom, don't die today." Even though they are young adults - I still feel that if something were to happen to me, the real tragedy would be the impact on my loved ones. This poor woman had 3 minor children - they REALLY still need their mother.

In the case of this murder, she had been chatting with him awhile, had been dating about 3 weeks... especially if I had met friends or family by then I would be very trusting and getting in a car with him etc. I won't change my behavior significantly because of this but it definately gave me pause.

I am not in the least bit comforted in the knowledge that women are more likely to be assualted/killed by someone they know. That happened to me, I was attacked and held hostage for the better part of a day by someone I had worked with for about 6 months... he pointed a gun at me besides being physically overwhelmed. That happened when I was 17 and i have never forgotten that feeling of being completely not able to control the situation and keep myself safe. We operate under the illusion of safety until we are not...

Wow. Even when you take all the right precautions there is still risk of something evil happening. Safety is an illusion I agree. The older I get the sadder I become at what the world is coming to.

So, I am curious how you are all doing this checking? Did you subscribe to a paid background checking website?

Probably because I am old..haha... many guys dont even have Facebook accounts. When I google names, I tend to get a linked in profile, perhaps some photos posted to google images - that is about it. In the case of the man I am currently seeing, I found his law practice web presence of course. I have never found anything "useful" by checking the internet.

@@CowgirlJane - Good question. In Oklahoma you go to: http://www.oscn.net/applications/oscn/casesearch.asp. That has all civil and criminal cases are stored.

Every state has an equivalent. These are free. But it takes a little detective work. In the course of conversation you learn where they have lived, you know about how old they are. Sites like http://www.spokeo.com/ can give you their legal name and you search it. Most people my age will tell you how long they have been divorced, and I usually ask where it was done and who was their judge. I can check that quickly.

I will be the first to admit, there is a fine line between creepy stalking and being safe, but I think you owe it to yourself and anyone in your home to be safe. I am remarkably transparent online and have always given women links to my social media (professional and personal) so they can relax a little when we meet (they can tell I'm a real person and can dig deep if they want).

We are lucky to be living at a time when we can do this and I really think you should.

I just tried the spokeo website on myself and found lots of errors. In one spot I'm 95 years old instead of 52, and it shows that I'm married and I have never been. They have all kinds of phone numbers listed for me that I've never had and my current cell phone number is one that I had 18 years ago. That can be a problem with some of those sites.

I'm sorry, to clarify, Spokeo is a tool, and that's what I mean by doing a "little detective work," You have to realize things get inputted into databases badly. So you have to filter and guess, but it gets you a little closer to figuring out if they are who they say they are and if things look safe. I have a friend who hates being tracked and you can't find him online at all. So its not perfect. But for most, there is usually something.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
