I had my surgery on March 7, 2016, and yesterday I started throwing up blood. I threw up about every 10 minutes or less, and couldn't even keep down a sip of Water. I went to the emergency room where they did blood tests, an EKG and a cat scan and did not find any issues. They released me with no reason as to why I was vomitting blood.

Did anyone else have issues similar to this? I don't see my surgeon again until my one month check up on Thursday. Should I be concerned?

Vomiting blood is NEVER normal, as I'm sure you know. I know you mentioned that you went to the ED, but I would still call your surgeon's office asap to make them aware instead of waiting a month until your appt. I'm sure they would want to know this info and may possibly even want to see you sooner? Good luck!

The staff in the emergency room didn't seem concerned at all. They said I might have just irritated my esophagus from throwing up, but it was a ton of blood and I couldn't stop.

Vomiting up blood is not normal. Are you still vomiting blood or has it resolved? It is a good thing the ER did the scan, lab work and EKG. Did they consult with your surgeon? All surgeons should have a way to contact them after hours through the their answering service. Normally you call the office and it will state they are closed and either connect you through to an answering service or give a number for you to call to contact them. If you are still vomiting I would page the on call person and let them know your symptoms and that you have already been evaluated in the ED and that you were discharged. That way a bariatric specialist can let you know what they want you to do.

Was it red blood or coffee grounds? My son had this occur 3-4 months after having his g-tube placed and an intestinal malrotation corrected. He was throwing up coffee grounds. The ER contacted his surgeon just in case. They admitted him for a week and put him on gut rest. Finally decided it was gastritis.

Just wanted to add that if you have any vomiting issues, always contact your bariatric surgeon, ideally before you even go to the hospital. Some places even make you sign a contact to do so. Having GI issues treated by a non bariatric surgeon can sometimes lead to inappropriate treatment. Emergency room doctors just aren't experts in bariatric surgery issues. I hope you are feeling better and this is just a bump in the road.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
