Tuna Time! Share Your Protein Recipes Here!

Recommended Posts

Canned tuna is one of the ideal foods for WLS patients. It has 70 calories and 14 grams of Protein per serving, not to mention that it’s carb-free and full of omega-3 fatty acids. Plus, in a world where it can be tough to put together a nutritious meal because it takes too long, canned tuna is a perfect solution that can sit in your pantry for whenever you need it.

But there is a potential drawback: it can get awfully boring if you have it plain day in, day out. Traditional mayo-laden tuna salad and fat and carb laden tuna noodle casserole are non-starters for WLS patients…so how do you prepare your tuna to be delicious and healthy? Share your recipes here, please! We could all use some tuna tips.

If you’re not into tuna or your best Protein recipe uses something else, please share that recipe, too! Whether it’s chicken breast, Beans, smoked mussels, Greek yogurt, or another healthy protein, we definitely want to hear how you make it even more delicious while keeping it healthy.

One of my favorite tuna salads is the Mediterranean tuna salad at Whole Foods.

My approximation:

Tuna

A couple of pieces of marinated artichoke hearts

Kalamata olives

A spoonful of feta cheese

Some red onion (if I have it)

Greek seasoning

A dab of mayo or aioli

I also make a "tuna melt" with some greens Beans, tuna, and grated cheese on top, heated up to hear the green Beans and melt the cheese. (The ranch flavored packet of tuna works great for this one.)

I really don't enjoy canned tuna since the day I caught a tuna myself, and ate sushi grade tuna for the first time. I am now spoiled for life!

That reminds me: It's time to go fishing!! :)

I freaking love the new single serving packs of flavored tuna and salmon.

I keep my desk drawer at work filled with them. So many varieties are available now. No preparation needed....just grab a spoor or fork......open those bad boys up and have a meal.

Great stuff.

@ Alex: Fresh tuna fresh on the boat----one fish, one fillet knife, optional--one lemon! Enjoy! :)

Since surgery tuna has no appeal to me. I used to love a quick tuna salad on romaine lettuce. Or on hollowed cucumber for a nice low carb meal. I'm hoping one day my new tummy and tuna will rekindle their friendship so I can benefit from it again.

I have a couple more tuna recipes

each of these use 1 can of tuna

Southwestern tuna

1 tablespoon corn, 1 tablespoon black Beans, 1 tablespoon diced red onion, 1 tablespoon rotel, 1 teaspoon mayo

Asian style tuna

1 tablespoon sliced green onion, half teaspoon grated ginger, 1 teaspoon soy sauce. I didn't add any mayo to this one but you can add some if you want it to be moister (is moister a word?)

Mediteranian tuna

1 tablespoon sliced kalamata olives, 1 teaspoon chopped dill, 1 tablespoon diced cucumber, 1 tablespoon greek yogurt, a small squeeze of lemon juice

EDIT: forgot a few

taco tuna

a little bit of shredded lettuce,1 tablespoon of diced canned tomatoes and 1 tablespoon of the juice, 1 tablespoon diced red onion, pinch or two of taco seasoning to taste

Tomato basil tuna

1 tablespoon diced tomatoes, 1 tablespoon chopped basil, 1 teaspoon mayo

lemony tuna

1 tablespoon capers, a good squirt of lemon juice, a pinch of lemon pepper, 1 teaspoon of mayo

I'm a big tuna fan, and get around the mayo issue by subbing in either greek yogurt (Fage 0%) or a bit of avocado. With the Nutribullet, it is easy to whip up a quick dressing to mix into the tuna. My husband doesn't really diet much, and he loves these like crazy. I'm bad with recipes, but here's a couple ideas...feel free to play with amounts to fit your preferences!

For kimchi tuna salad:

Quarter avocado

1 tsp gojuchang

juice of half a lime

One or two scallions depending on size or preference

1 tsp sherry vinegar

1 hunk fresh ginger

Teeny splash (TEENY TINY) toasted sesame oil

Blend those ingredients and mix into 2 cans tuna and 1 cup chopped kimchi (cabbage is best for this) and diced celery. Top with sesame seeds!

Zaatar tuna salad:

1/2 cup greek yogurt (Fage 0%)

1 tsp EVOO

juice of 1 lemon (and zest if you're feeling zesty)

1 clove garlic

1 or 2 sprigs of dill

2 tbsp parsley

1 tbsp zaatar seasoning (more or less depending on how you like it)

optional: a little zchug, a kind of hot pepper paste!

Combine ingredients and blend. Toss with 2-3 cans tuna, 1 cup diced cucumber and 1/2 cup shredded carrot. You can top with a little bit of feta cheese!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
