Stairs suck!

Started out on the 22nd floor at work and walked down 2 flights, then back up one. I did that from 22 down to 14. So, 2 down and one up. Then 14 straight down. That was Friday night. I still can't hardly walk!! It hurts but it's a good hurt. No pain no gain right ! Hopefully by Tuesday I'll be able to hit them again. But.... not so many floor back up. :)

Baby steps.

Be careful walking in stairwells alone. They aren't always the safest places to be.

Years ago I worked on the 13th floor of a building that also had several levels down to street level. Whenever we had a fire drill we were all sore the next day.

I had one other guy that was in there with me kinda. He was walking to the top then riding the elevator down.

Years ago I lived in Indianapolis and went to the Soldiers and Sailors' Monument. It was 330 steps up and 330 steps down. I could barely walk for a week because my calves were so sore. Just be careful and pace yourself.

I don't have a clue how many steps I did. Hopefully my new tracker will count them for me when I get back to it on Tuesday

Climbing the Cape Hatteras lighthouse was memorable but that was decades ago. Now, I still have trouble with one flight of stairs.

@@SamBwaR3, be sure you're not overdoing it at the beginning. You need to be able to breathe in the process. If you haven't already, you may want to consult a qualified trainer.

Maybe you're secretly training for the Empire State Building Run-up, 86 floors, 1,576 steps.

Going down that many flight would have given me a nasty case of shin splints - ooowwwwie!

Take care, you can really hurt yourself doing too much too soon!

I'm hard headed!

Normally I do about 10 flights a day but they are spaced out 2 at a time. I'm walking a bit better this morning. :) Still look like Forest Gump and his magic legs when walking though!

Hill walking (or in your case stair walking) uses two different types of muscles, one going up and the other down. It is a great form of exercise. Far greater than walking on a flat plane. As I recall, my doctor did not release me for this form of exercise until a few weeks after surgery because it is a little more strenuous than just walking.

So don't push yourself too fast using this mode of exercise right after surgery. Work into it slowly.

When I was younger, I did a bike tour a few weeks after returning from Europe. My "training" training for the bike ride? Climbing cathedrals and hiking in the Alps! I don't know that it was my best choice, but I managed to finish a century (100 miles, 1 day) while on the tour and could still ride the next day. Did I say I was MUCH younger then!?!?!

Hahaha stairs do suck! I lived in a high rise condo when I was losing weight and I would walk up 40 flights of stairs. Emphasis on "walk" lol. The first time I tried to jog up them I about died on the 4th floor. Even when I had reached goal and I was reasonably in shape and I could do the full set in about 2 minutes, I would get to my floor and sit down for about 5 minutes because I felt like my heart might explored. Steps are evil, lol.

On a positive note though, when I was moving out and the elevator broke, I wasn't thrilled that I had to go up and down the stairs about 5 times in 2 hours, but it was easy to do. All the misery of going up and down them when I was overweight led to an ability to do them when I needed to without having an issue. I wouldn't have been able to get up them quickly or probably more than twice before I lost weight and as of a few months ago it got my heart pounding nicely, but up and down 40 flights was more annoying than exhausting.

In the end the work you put in now will pay off later. Remind yourself of that as your lurching around trying to walk because your quads won't bend right, haha.

That is exactly what I am thinking !! I am looking at the big picture not the short term. With all the stairs we have here at work, I need the practice !

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
