Has anyone been told by their doctor that having the sleeve will remove part of the stomach that makes electrolytes to fight off colds, flu, allergies etc.? And have they told you that you will be more open to illness afterwards?

That sounds like total hogwash to me! Your immune system is not centered in your stomach, for heaven's sake.

What? I have literally been on these forums for 2 years and spent hundreds of hours researching WLS and I have never heard any of this nonsense. In my personal experience, in my 18 months post-op, I haven't been sick any more frequently or severely than I was pre-op.

Total and utter nonsense..the stomach does not produce those. However, poor nutrition does impact it which is why it is so important to take Vitamins and get your fluids and Protein in.

I had my surgery in Mexico. When I got home my best friend had talked to her cousin that is a RN. The RN said that I would stay sick all the time because the portion of my stomach they take out helps the immune system by making electrolytes. Now that it is gone my body won't make any more so I will stay sick all the time. I had never ever heard of such!

I think you friend's cousin can come back and talk to us once she has her MD and has been performing bariatric surgeries for over a decade like all of our board certified surgeons have.....

That RN needs to go back to school.

I would ask for the link to peer reviewed study indicating this. Since when does the stomach manufacture electrolytes? Since when do electrolytes prevent colds etc? I feel as though there is a huge misunderstanding on someone's part.

LOL!

No.

P.S. Tomorrow I'll be 19 months post-op. I've lost 100 pounds. Have maintained my weight loss for nearly a year and now weigh 135 pounds. I've not had a single cold, the flu or any other illness since WLS surgery. I'm 70 years old.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
