I am in need of some insight

Recommended Posts

I am 3 months into my 6 month diet & exercise program. All of my appointments are complete. Now all I can do is wait until my 6 months is up. I have a couple of questions: My surgeon is requiring me to pay up front before they will schedule surgery. I have called and asked for a quote of sorts, something to give me an idea of how much I need be saving. I have insurance with BC/BS of Georgia. My individual deductible is $3800 & family is $7600. So far the insurance has covered the majority of the costs. I also had $1200 in an HRA account which has been used. I was able to find out the the surgeon charges $3480 for Gastric Bypass and $2575 for the Sleeve. I was told that his fees are what I need to cover to get a surgery date. I just wish I could get a straight answer. Has anyone else had to deal with this and approximately how much out of pocket did you have to pay to the surgeon. Also, I will not be able to meet with the surgeon until my 6 months is up. Is that normal? I would have thought that a consult of some sorts would be part of the evaluation process. Any thoughts are appreciated.

It may depend on your surgeon. I had to pay my deductible plus 20% estimated cost with my BCBS Insurance. The surgical coordinator should be able to tell you how much you would need to pay before the procedure is scheduled.

I hope this helps

I met with the surgeon on the day I began the process. I began incurring cost at the beginning of the process and some of these charges started eating away at my deductible from the get-go. But since this entire process (6 month medically supervised weight loss and exercise program, pre-op testing, second round of pre-op testing, surgery/hospital) can take almost a year, it can be staggered over 2 calendar years and effect two years of deductible. Overall the entire cost was in the $50K range and my out of pocket after insurance was around $5K. But I have a different insurance than BC/BS. Also I was not asked to pay up front prior to surgery.

There are many costs to consider in arriving at the final costs, for example the cost of the anesthesiologist, the cost of the pre-op testing, the cost of the second round of pre-op testing by specialist in their respective fields if this is warranted. I even incurred the cost of a second surgeon that assisted my primary surgeon. So it is difficult to determine the final out-of-pocket cost in advance.

my surgeons office runs the cost of their fee per my insurance and puts it on a nice sheet of paper outlined for me

How far in advance did they do that? Or was it right before your surgery?

I'm sitting at my surgeon's office for my final (pre op) appointment. I still owe around $2k to meet my Out Of Pocket, but they're only asking $700 up front and the remainder will be owed to the hospital.

That's a pretty high amount...

Adding: I have UHC for insurance

I appreciate your input, thank you very much. I am aware of additional costs that will be applied, all of those will go to insurance first and then I will be billed. I'm just wondering how much I need just to schedule the surgery. In other words, the surgeons fee. I know you can't tell me that, but I do appreciate your input.

Sorry for all of the duplicate posts! I'm still new here and the internet isn't cooperating.

I did meet one of the surgeons during the educational seminar, he also performed my Endoscopy. But I have not had an opportunity to sit down with him and ask questions. I have been to several support group meetings, but that isn't the same as being one on one with the surgeon. I just hope I'm not making a mistake with this particular group.

@ I didn't get my quote for the surgeon's fee until my surgery had been approved which happened on 021516. Was told to have my payment ready for this appointment that I'm currently at. So...not a ton of notice in advance but......it is what it is. Lol

I kinda figured that would be the case. My 6 month diet/exercise program is up the middle of June. I am thinking that my surgery will be in August. I'm trying to give enough time for surgeon appt., insurance approval and scheduling of surgery date. Am I being realistic or does that seem like too much time?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
