Night Before Freak Out

Recommended Posts

I've had two panic attacks today. I'm NOT afraid of the surgery. What scares me is

  1. This is my last chance, what if I blow this somehow?
  2. Life as I know it will never be the same, how will I cope with an 'unknown normal'?

I know these are largely hypothetical questions. I'm really just looking for someone to talk me down out of the tree tops!

Pam<-----17 hours and counting til I leave for the hospital.

Nana, first - stop and take a deep breath. Now, take a moment and think about why you're having this surgery in the first place. You want to live a healthier life. You want to be around for your family and friends. And honestly, do you want your life to continue as it is? I know I didn't and that's why I made my decision to get banded.

Just re-focus on your whys...health, family, etc...and that should definitely help you calm down a bit.

We wish you the best and we're here for you!

Pam,

It was comforting for me, at the stage you're facing, to remember I'd chosen an ADJUSTABLE procedure. Though it's likely that you're going to want to face all those changes as quickly as possible (because losing weight is great!), if you panick later on, the speed at which you approach the changes is completely in your control.

You're going to do great. Hang in there and just get the procedure behind you.

Take care,

Thanks, both of you and WOW!! Like, I had completely forgotten it CAN be in my control.

btw--your ticker alone is SO inspiring, Julie! Thanks again!

And chimboree -- you made me LOL. I'm always the one telling people,

"Breathe out, Breathe in, Oxygen is our friend!" There are quite a few who would momentarily relish getting to fling that advice back at me!

Thanks!

Ditto!

I too had a major anxiety attack before being banded, for no reason at all. Everything has been great. If you are religious, pray for your guardian angel to help you.

Thanks! I have asked the Lord for help several times today. And I've had a great number of friends and family call or email to let me know they'll be praying for me tomorrow.

I am blessed!!

Nana -- Look around you at all these HAPPY bandsters!! You want to be one of us, don't you??? :) Well, there's this one little thing you have to do first.....

Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you'll be GREAT!! In two short weeks you'll be good as new. Remember how lucky you are that you are even ABLE to have this surgery! So many can't but want it desperately.

GO GIRL!!

Thank you, you are so right.

In fact, I think I will probably have something akin to "survivor's guilt" as I encounter people who need this as bad or worse than I do/did.

I hope it will spur me on to be truly and permanently successful!

P.S. I was actually able to go to sleep and was sound asleep when hubby's work phone went off at 4 AM!!!:)

Good Luck, and we'll see you in bandland! Don't forget to post and let us know how you did!

I did nothing. :cry

Got cancelled just as I was being wheeled from pre-op to OR.

Cardiologist referred me for surgery, but never cleared me and he couldn't be reached -- out-of-town until next week.

Color me 'bummed'. :help:

Why not!?! I got no where else to go! :)

I did even suggest that hubby drop me off at a motel so I could just hibernate -- I really don't want to be around anybody and explain everything umpteen times.

:ranger: You guys get to be the lucky ones.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
