Wondering if anyone had their surgery and never got a barroom swallow or some type of radiology after surgery.

I hear about, everyone having a barium swallow or upper gi before they leave the hospital to check for leaks. Ididnt have anything I'm wondering if some doctors just don't do it or if my doctor just doesn't feel the need to cuz he hasn't had a leak in over 9 years...... I was expecting to get one...

I personally had an ugi the next day after surgery but I have heard of some doctors testing while you're still asleep. So that could happen but they should always check first before you eat or drink

If mine was checked it was while I was still under.

My surgeon doesn't do it. I asked and he explained leaks are not likely to show up right away anyways due to swelling and he found that he was doing tests that never showed a problem, so why do them. Made sense to me and I was fine after.

Mine also checks in the OR. I didn't have a drain, so I didn't have to drink anything special.

I don't recall ever having one.

Nope. No leak test. I was told there's something they did during the procedure to check but no radiology of any kind for me. Stared me on liquids as soon as I woke up. Released the next day.

I was shocked to learn my surgeon doesn't do leak tests. He thinks the nausea caused by the stuff they make you swallow is worse than the very low percent who might have a leak. They did keep me only on ice chips all night. About 6AM the nurse told me I could try taking very small sips of Water, wait a few minutes, sip. If that was okay, then she would bring me broth or a popsickle.

I had to swallow that stuff for my thyroid swallow test and it is nasty.

I expected one. But same thing, doc doesn't do them because he says that test at that point isn't useful.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
