I had my Pulmonary function test today and when I questioned the tech as to why I had to do this, she replied that the Doc could decline to clear me for surgery if I don't pass the test. I get to find out the results on Monday.

My question to others; has this ever happened? Has anyone been told no to surgery because of PFT test?

I had to take the PFT and I was worried about it because I don't have what I would consider good lung function, but I passed with flying colors. It was just part of a series of tests my Pulm

Dr wanted to do. (In addition to the sleep study which I did NOT pass with flying colors and now I have a CPAP. *tears*)

Do you have a surgery date? I failed my sleep study also but my surgery was only 10 days out, so my doctor felt i would be ok without a CPAP. He felt my weight loss post op would prevent me needing treatment for sleep Apnea. My husband has a CPAP and let me tell you i am ok without it.

Yes. My date is March 10th but I didn't get a date till after all that was done and signed off by my Pulm. My husband had a CPAP for a long time too and I HATED it. I was VERY upset when they told me I needed one. My pulm said it's very mild and if I wasn't having surgery, she would just tell me to lose weight, but having this surgery without being on a CPAP slightly increases risk of death following surgery. I still hate it and can't wait to be done with it.

Hi countryrose what exactly i s a pulmonary function test?? May I ask when you started the program?? Nice to meet you

The PFT is a four part test that requires you to breathe through a tube into a computer. It measures your lung function and capacity.

I started everything Jan3, 2016. I have one Dr weigh in left and then a preop apt with my surgeon. I was told that if everything is good, i'll have surgery in April. He doesn't require the crazy 2-4wk liquid diet and I'm so relieved! Good luck to you on your journey!

I remember taking a PFT back in 2001 before my original surgery. My surgeon at the time said it was to make sure I could handle the anesthesia without being intubated because intubation makes things more complicated.

The revision I just had didn't require much pre-op tests just the barium swallow, endoscopy, CBC work up & an EKG.

Best of luck on your journey it's so worth it and it works if you work it

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
