Denied for lack of effort?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been denied by their insurance for a lack of showing effort during the pre-op phase?

I am about a month away from being submitted for insurance approval. My doctor told me that although I have met the requirements for the weight loss (5%), losing only the 5% over the course of 10 months shows very little lifestyle change and it will probably be denied. I understand what he's saying, and I guess I did drop the ball on this one. But I've been waiting a year and I will be crushed if this is denied. If the insurance company wanted more of a loss, why don't they require it? I don't want to make excuses, this is entirely my fault. I didn't fix what causes me to eat. But I still want a chance at a life!!!

That is really sad to hear. I agree that if they require more to approve you, they need to make that a "requirement". Obviously we are all here cause we had/have problems with our weight and eating so they shouldn't be too shocked when someone can't do it completely on their own. If you could, you wouldn't need surgery! It is also unfortunate that your doctor is just telling you this now and didn't mention it to you months ago so you could kick it into high gear. That doesn't make any sense to me. I'm sorry you are going through this and hope that you get approved. You can't worry about it until you know that you have something to worry about so just stay the course for now and try and stay positive! Keep us posted.

You wrote that you have a month to go before your file is submitted. A month is a worthy amount of time to kick it up and prove that you are in it to win it!!!

Get going!

You can do this!

This exactly. I lost 14 lbs in the 2 weeks before my surgery. If I can do that you can easily loss 10 lbs or more in the next month. Focus on reducing your sugar and carbs. Eat more Protein. Use Protein shakes as Meal Replacements. Don't give up. You CAN do this.

do you currently log your food - do it for a couple days and really look at it. like others have said - you'd be amazed how much you can drop in the first month after cutting out sugar and cutting way back on carbs. I dropped 14 lbs in the first month of my pre-op just by cutting out the soda and my starbucks caramel macchiato habit and skipping the mac&cheese and potatoes. Not even adding exercise. It is a shame you doctor didn't mention this sooner but perhaps he did it now to be the push you need. It ain't over til it's over - work for it this next month!

These insurance requirements are ridiculous. When people lose too much pre-op, then they deny them. What a hornets nest.

I did preop for 3 weeks before surgery. High Protein, low carb, low calorie, low fat. Basically a Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch, and a salad and 6 oz of chicken breast or fish for dinner. I lost 21 lbs during that period of time. It sucks, it's limiting, but it may get you to where the insurance company wants you to be. You have time.

I was required to lose 5% and struggled after 6 months of nutrition and diet program it took another 3 months to get to weight loss center I lost exactly the 5% in 9 months I just got my approval. I think it will also depend on your other health issues, I have everything listed so my insurance company probably thought I really need this surgery, which I do. Saying that you should do what others suggested and try to lose as much as possible before they send paperwork in to insurance. Good luck!

I just wanted to update my status here, I had my final weigh in this morning, down 9lbs this month, total weight lost 32 lbs. My PCP signed off on the paperwork so now I have a few more clearances to deal with and then it's time to submit my info!

Are you sure that your doctor is telling you the truth about your insurance criteria? Do you have a copy of your insurance's medical policy concerning WLS?

I'm only saying this because in more than five years reviewing WLS cases, no insurance plan I work with ever required a specific loss during any supervisied diet plan period.

Not sure I'm doing this quoting thing correctly or not...

Paperwork still not submitted because this doctors office doesn't run very well. After numerous calls from both me and my insurance coordinator the office still has yet to send my stuff to my surgeon. I went to the office in person and they told me that they have someone who sends it out once a week and I will have to wait. Beyond frustrated!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
