Post VSG - Stomach Bug - Not sure what to do

Recommended Posts

I had VSG in Dec 2014 - last week I got very sick with an awful stomach bug where everything I ate went through me (sorry TMI). I didn't throw up but have been steadily very sick to my stomach. I went to my GP on Wed and she didn't think I seemed that dehydrated even though I have only been getting about 4 cups of Water a day. My upset stomach has gone away but now I can't get anything down - when I try to eat Protein I just spit it up i'm so grossed out by it. I can eat toast and crackers but the carbs are making me feel super sick after I eat. I feel very sick, shaky, and dizzy. I can't call my surgeon bc I just switched health insurance and won't have coverage for a specialist until Feb 1st.

I don' tknow what to do or why I'm reacting so awfully to this stomach bug. Has anyone else had the stomach flu and how did you get rhough it? This is the worse experience I've had since surgery. Help?

Been there too. Just drink liquids to keep hydrated & take Vitamins. Make sure you get LOTS of rest. If you can, try to get Protein Drinks down. Mine lasted over a week. All kinds of germs going around, especially with the crazy weather, never mind people travelling to & from different countries. I think bed rest is best. Good luck.

I have never been able to stomach Protein shakes - its brutal. This is the worse I've felt since surgery. I just can't imagine eating - and I have to go back to school tomorrow.

Just whining but I feel scared since its been 6 days like this.

I'm sorry you are going through this. chicken Soup broth helps you also might want to try the old brat diet bananas, plain rice with no butter margarine, applesauce and dry toast. Also Jello.< /p>

Tylenol liquid cold medicine helped me with the coughing.

Why can't you? Phone calls and emails are typically free. You can at least try and see what they recommend (short of coming into the office to be seen). Your surgical team knows best what you can do with your sleeve to help overcome the bug.

Roast a chicken. Pull the meat off and freeze it for later. Take the carcass with the nibbly bits on it and simmer it in a pot with a couple of carrots, potatoes and pieces of celery: onion and garlic, and black pepper too, if you like it.

In about an hour you can take out the veggies and save them for another day. This will leave you with a hearty broth that not only will provide you with needed fluids, but Protein as well....not to mention that warm broth is closer to being a comfort food than cold Water is. Get well, soon - and I mean it!

5-6 weeks post op and I just got the stomach flu from my wife who had it for 3 days. I take a sip of anything and I immediately throw it up...I hate to sound graphic but "it's coming out of both ends." Can we take Kaopectate? I don't think I've ever felt this sick in my life...

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
