What does it feel like right afterwards?

Recommended Posts

The only reason I felt light we because I had been starved on the pre-op diet and was running on air. 10 days of liquids with the last day being Clear Liquids will make you feel light as a feather. Other than that. Just sore. I really had almost no pain. If I hadn't seen my sleeve on screen I would have never believed it. The gas pain in my shoulder on the later days was the worse.

Immediately after waking up from surgery, I felt nauseated. Once they gave me Zofran for that, then it was mainly sore and bloated feeling--not my actual stomach, but my abdominal area in general.

I had my surgery two days ago in Burbank, CA.

I've had three knee surgeries prior to this, and tolerate pain pretty well, but this was just different. I remember waking up in the recovery room, beyond groggy, loopy, nauseous, and in pain. The pain wasn't the typical "ouch" pain, it was more of a I just did a million crunches and my abs are trying to recover soreness. My stomach felt "unsecured", and I remember the first day being in the hospital and barely being able to walk 10 ft without feeling like vomiting--although I never actually did.

Day two (today) was much better. Was able to walk. Get some fluids in. And they actually sent me home. But now I have found myself unable to sleep more than 2-3 hours at a time. Gas builds up and I have to start walking my hallway until I burp or something.

I had really bad acid reflux/heart burn when I woke up (this by far was the worst part of my experience and lasted the whole time I was in the hospital) and some tenderness in my abdomen. Not painful but sore. Also, just like everyone else, I was bloated with fluids. I went in on surgery day at 258 and came out at 263 lol But it went away. Oh and something I don't hear a lot of people talk about but was miserable for me was the dry mouth! I had ice chips in my mouth constantly otherwise I couldn't even talk lol.

Mostly bloated with a little sore in there. Honestly once I got rid of the gas by walking and staying hydrated I had no problem. In hospital 2 nights and came home with liquid Vicodin. That stuff burned my stomach so I avoided taking it as well as liquid Tylenol.

I just toughed it out for a day or two because the pain meds don't cover the gas pain anyway.

It's a little deceiving, for most there really is no pain, you will start the liquid diet. Your stomach is swollen (still no pain) but because of this its bigger, so when you start to drink and for some start to eat, you dont feel any restriction. Than about 4 weeks out the swollen is gone and you start to feel the difference.

i just started my 4 week diet where i can eat really food and I did feel the restriction.

I did not have the "shoulder gas", but was nauseous until I used up the post-op meds I had to take. The Zophran behind the ear Patches helped enough that I did not vomit. Nothing felt smaller. I gained 12 pounds from fluids at the hospital. But with every pound I Iost, I felt better.

Not lighter, heavier. Bloated, swollen, slightly nauseous, but not enough to throw up. Didn't need pain meds other than whatever was in my IV right after. Took me a while to really be coherent after. Used what they gave me for nausea and the nausea patch behind the ear and my discomfort was well managed. Laps that night several times, home 24 hours after. Funny, you'd THINK it would feel smaller after the swelling goes down, but I didn't. I'm not talking about restriction, that is definitely still working 2+ years out, but sitting here, I don't "feel" any different in the tummy area.

I had stomach spasms and vomiting a few hours after, so I was in from Monday until Thursday. Once that was done not a lot of pain. Once out of the hospital I just used Tylenol for pain.

I had lots of pain and nausea and ended up back in the hospital in shock like state. But I'm not typical, I guess. However, I felt much better in less than a week - two weeks after surgery - I hiked in the mountains.

Think of it this way: if it's the worst pain you can imagine - can you tough it out for a week? That's really all it was, and the narcotics helped - very yes.

Read this: http://www.bariatricfoodie.com/five-not-so-stupid-questions-about-life-after-weight-loss-surgery/

Mind if I ask you, what brought you back into the hospital? And what was the reason for your extreme discomfort?

Then, how the heck does anyone hike after 2 weeks! lol My many many kudos to you!! =)

Does your stomach feel lighter?

It's a rare surgery of any type that doesn't hurt right after to one degree or another. Different people have different pain thresholds.

I hope your question isn't implying that you think weight-loss surgery is magic. Far from it. There is work to be done and there are habits to be worked on. That goes for the losing stage and the maintaining stage.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
