Hello! I'm a couple months post op and mostly all is going well! But I often times experience a clear, slimy kind of Fluid that comes up on the back of my throat to the point I have to spit it out. Sometimes I throw up, but it's also clear slime, not at all like throwing up before surgery. What causes this?

Usually, eating too fast or too much. The vagus nerve runs along the top of the stomach. It controls reactions in the upper half of the body, such as sneezing, runny nose, hiccuping, and yes, it can make your esophagus and mouth produce slime. When it gets irritated by food mashing against it, it considers making you throw up or somehow get rid of the food, hence the slime. Try eating slower, eating less, chewing more carefully, etc.

Some people do experience sliming even apart from eating as they heal from surgery, just because the nerve is kind of pissed off in general after the trauma of surgery. Usually that resolves itself as you get further from surgery and things heal down there. But that situation is rare -- it's usually from eating too much or too fast. Good luck!

I haven't had WLS yet. When people talk about "Slime" is it similar to the mouth-watering feeling I get that tells me I'm about to vomit?

I had it for the first time Monday. I started feeling like I was going to throw up and then saliva was practically pouring out of my mouth. I had no idea what to do! It was so strange, I've never experienced anything like that before.

For me it is not like mouth watering, it is like needing to spit, but thicker. When you spit it tends to want to hang around too. Like I literally have to stand over the toilet until it decides to drop. Mine lasts for several minutes, and usually is relieved after vomiting.

This was happening quite frequently at first, but once I got the hang of how my body wanted me to eat (1 bite every 3-4 minutes), then it slowed quite a bit, even though if I eat something my tummy does not agree with it will happen.

Same here as for MiaF. Eating too fast, eating something too dry. or something my stomach doesn't want. I find that some days I can eat eggs and others it's disgusting. I had chili today which initially went down find and then slime. It's disgusting but I'm at 2 months and it is happening less often thank god.

I've had the foaming and slime three times already. The first time I had food stuck in my esophagus and it took some time to get it down; meanwhile, I'm foaming uncontrollably. The last two times, I also had a really bad stomachache with the foam. The only thing that helped was throwing the food back up. Sorry to gross anyone out, but after I tossed it back up my stomachache instantly went away and the foam stopped.

Thank you all so much. I am still learning mindful eating. Like many of us I'm busy and sometimes eat carelessly (too much or too fast) and have trouble knowing when I'm full until it's too late.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
