Resuming medications in pill form

Recommended Posts

I have asked my surgeon if and when I can resume taking my already prescribed Cymbalta now since my sleeve. He told me to ask my pharmacist. I cant for the life of me get through to them at all on the phone so I am asking here before I Google it.

Can I take it apart and take it? Anyone experience this?

Thnaks

I was not allowed to swallow pills until I was 3 months out. I have no idea about crushing cymbalta, that is a question for the pharmacist

Well these pills are like capsules (plasticy with a jacketed halves). so no crushing just pulling apart and there is a powder med n it.

So I did find on google to never ever take them apart as it may damage me....so wait till tomorrow for an answer, Going in person, I HAVE TO take my cymbalta. This isnt a drug one should stop taking,

I guess every doctor is different. My doctor had me resume a couple of my meds that are in pill form, while still in the hospital after surgery.

I'd ask the pharmacist or your primary care doctor before taking apart or crushing any meds, some of which my be time released. Just my opinion.

I started all my meds back the night of my surgery. I take a heart med that if you miss, you have to go inpatient to restart. I also take Cymbalta and just had to go very slow in taking all my pills. My doc just had me restart the capsules.

I also take Cymbalta, one in the a.m. and one before bed. My Psychiatrist suggested I take the morning capsule apart and mix the little balls with applesauce or something like it. There is no powder; there are 12 little "balls" in each capsule. I checked with my Pharmacist, and she said it is fine to take Cymbalta this way. I cut a very little bit off the end of the 'larger' part of the capsule with a small, very sharp paring knife and empty the "balls" in to a small dish. I add a tablespoon or more of applesauce, mix it together, and eat it with a spoon. (Swallow the little "balls" without chewing them.) I have been doing this for several months, and I have not encountered any problems.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
