Sleep Study Hell

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I just had my sleep study last night since my insurance will only cover me if I have sleep apnea because my BMI isn't high enough. Anyway, it was hell and I am 99% sure that I didn't sleep a wink. Now I am freaking out that they won't diagnose me with sleep apnea cause they won't think I have it since I didn't sleep for them to see it! My boyfriend has to sleep on the couch most nights cause my snoring is so bad, so I know I have some kind of issue. I don't get my results back until 1/13 but was just wondering if anyone went through something similar? Also attaching a photo for your amusement. I mean, how do they expect anyone to sleep like this? Ugh. Appreciate any replies, advice, etc. post-268505-14521122175705_thumb.jpg

When I had mine years ago, I had a miserable night too and its almost impossible to get to sleep in a strange place with wires all over you. Part way through they did come in and offer me some kind of sleep aid which helped a little but they were worried that I hadn't gotten enough sleep w/o cpap and then with cpap to be able to diagnose.

In the end I had gotten enough.

Ok so they should be able to tell if you slept enough for them to diagnose?

My initial study was a home study ... they gave me a little machine with a chest belt and an ox monitor. It was much more comfortable, I was at home, and I slept (or didnt sleep, as the case may be). This was enough to show I had episodes of lowered respiration at a certain number per hour, and was enough for a diagnosis. It also qualified me for a more in depth study had I wanted to go to the hospital for one, but I knew that sleep would be impossible there and opted out.

SOOO ... I guess, if they study doesn't come back where you need it to maybe you could look into or ask about the home study and see if that will help?!?!

A necessary evil for your insurance requirement. I'm sure your wait for the results is more painful than the wires they attached. ;) I hope you get good news that you will be approved.

I had the exact same experience with my sleep study, despite the fact that it was done at home. I'm a light sleeper, so I felt as if I got almost no sleep with that stuff all over me. The sleep study people were able to tell me immediately after my session was over that I had slept long enough for them to get a diagnosis. She said that if they get readings for about an hour and a half of sleep or so, that is typically enough to do the diagnosis.

I hated the sleep study!!!! It has been a nightmare from the beginning. My doctor has three offices in three different cities, takes forever to schedule an appointment, has incompetent staff that lose paperwork. I'm just at a loss. I finished all my clearances, nutrition classes, blood work, psych approval blah blah blah in early November here it is January and I'm STILL waiting for an approval from him. I originally did the study at home then he claimed I needed to do the study in their overnight office. I barely slept either because hello... There is crap everywhere and I'm breathing through a machine that is hurting my lungs! So I push through the silly study and they tell me my number is 5. I can't remember the term off hand but I know it's the lowest number you can have for the mildest of mild sleep apnea. Mind you I have NO TROUBLE sleeping at all. So I had to get fitted for a machine, wait for it to be shipped, and now use it a full 30 days before my approval from his office. AND he said I probably don't need it. So with are you prescribing it? And then on top of that he says well I think it will be a good idea just in case you need during surgery... OK fine. I'm OK with that but if that's the ONLY REAL REASON you want me to have it then why do I need to use the dumb piece of crap for 30 days? Sigh. Can you tell I'm ranting. Just hijacking your post. Lol. My bad!!!! I seriously think its only for insurance and billing purposes. And extra doctor visits. Smh!!! Best of luck. :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
