So..........6 month check up

Recommended Posts

I had my 6 month check up today and the dr was running late which was annoying. Then he walks in the door saying "Well.....you haven't lost much". I was upset. I started my journey Jan 8, 2015 at 265. Surgery was June 15(sleeve) and I was 240. Today I weighed in at 186. I was happy with how I look and feel, I think I still am I am just upset that the Doctor would walk in the door saying that. I start tonight with my personal trainer and I am going to take out my frustrations on him and in my workout!! Why would a doctor say such a thing!!! Plus I was having some pain on my right side which is wrist when I work out and I don't want to stop working out to wait the six months he suggest. So I came home and called my family dr he is sending me for a gallbladder ultrasound. I am just at a loss to go back to my dr who did surgery or just follow up with my family dr from now on.

Your Dr sounds like a ****** bag. 54 lbs in 6 months is something to be proud of.

I would call and ask for the office manager, let them know what happened, and ask if you can safely transition your care going forward to your primary care doctor.

Forget what he said. Hugs

I would never go back to that doctor again and continue follow up care with my PCP.

F*ck him.

So you lost 80 pounds in less than a year and he isn't thrilled? What a jerk. You don't need that negativity in your life. Put on your hater blockers and go on with your bad self. ????

Is it possible that he has dry sense of humor? Just wondering.

I, too, wondered if he has a weird sense of humor. Hard to drum up new patients if you treat your old ones with such disrespect!

You have done great and should be so proud of yourself. To heck with him!

As I had the personal trainer kicking my butt, I also am frustrated because he (the dr)asked what happened and I said the scales didn't move for about a month and he said "put the food down".

My normal day is:

*A cheese stick, if needed for Breakfast

*three pieces of shaved ham and piece of cheese rolled up for lunch

*dinner is a Protein and very small spoon of veggies.

*one Protein shake after my workout at nite

I don't think I over eat!!! I am so mad and when I told my hubby he didn't say anything and I just cried!!!

You have to take what personal trainers, even nutritionists, say with a grain of salt. As bariatric patients we have special needs. A personal trainer has not had training in what a bariatric patient needs. He can tell you how to work out and use good form using weights, that's about it. He cannot and should not give you nutritional advice unless he's been trained to deal specifically with bariatric patients. Unless a nutritionist specializes in bariatrics, they will tell you to focus more on veggies and grains than protein. Wrong. We have a lot less room and NEED protein.

Also, my weight stalls when I don't eat enough calories. Thankfully my primary doctor is smart and told me at a year out for my height I should be eating at least1,200 calories a day. I was still eating 800-1,000. I increased calories and weight started coming off again.

I know your doctor was a jerk and your personal trainer sounds like he knows what he's talking about (he doesn't) but all you have to do is the basic rules we were given from day 1.

Have you been tracking calories and macros? I suggest getting MyFitnessPal and seeing exactly how many calories you are eating so you can see if you need to increase them.

it was the dr that told me to put down the food, I was just thinking about my dr's appt was I was working with the personal trainer.

With the little amount of food I eat I have never tracked or keep record of it. I know that I get the 50-80 grams of protein in and that is what my nut was worried about. I am going to start tracking so just invade I decide to go back to dr that did surgery I can tell him look, this is what I am consuming.

Gradmaofone, you are a rock star. Never doubt yourself, if you are following the plan you have nothing at all to feel badly about.

Example My doctor either misread my chart or someone told him wrong, but I was expecting a attaboy for being down 31 pounds from initial visit, but instead I saw a concerned surgeon saying I had gained 20 lbs. I was shocked and hurt he thought that when I'd was so happy with my progress. He just said he must have gotten mis-information. I happens but it sure put a bad feeling in place before I went into surgery. Oh well, I'll be seeing his nurse practitioner most likely and other staff ongoing (was planning on doing that before this instance anyway). And yes, I'll show him what a loser I am!

We are in this to the best outcome we can have. I know I need to not dwell on my instance, and I'd suggest you let it go too. We just found some "stuff" on our journey and we scrape it off our mental replay list and move on.

Big hugs ((((((HUG)))))

What @@KristenVSG2014 said was spot on. You really need to start tracking your macros so you know where you stand. And personal trainers work you hard, so you need to make sure you're eating enough calories to compensate for that.

Like Kristen, almost every time I stalled was because I wasn't eating enough. By 7 months, I had upped my calories to 1000. This whole thing is sometimes one big science experiment, and you have to analyze and measure things to find the perfect combination to lose.

By the way, I had lost the exact same amount at 6 months. You're doing just fine :)

@@grandmaofone - my doctor did about the same thing to me at my first follow-up. I had surgery on May 6, 2015. Follow-up was about a month later. I had lost 25lbs. He never really said anything bad but it was the tone and the message he implied to me was that it wasn't enough.

I was pretty upset. I thought I was doing pretty damn good...

Next appointment on Sept 8 I was down 63 and I was pumped up. When he came in and he was all excited I just has to ask him about our earlier visit. And I did.

"Why, the attitude back in June?". He said some people can be "challenged" (for lack of a better word). I told him I was mad and he admitted he knew I was upset in June when I left. He said if I challenge some patients they will push to get as much out of those first few months. He admitted it doesn't work on everyone and other need a different approach to get them into gear.

We know those honeymoon months are the days to really lose. I felt played. Funny thing is he was right. I was doing ok, but I did kick it up a notch. He NEVER did, or has, said a number specifically to get to as far as weight.

He did tell me that even though I am fine with about another 20 pounds he wants me to push for about 30-35. I asked him why and he said because about a year out a lot seem to put on about 10%. I hope to be within 20 of that goal when I see him in a month (that's about 10 pounds).

Just thought I would share~

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
